Rumer's Cancer Treatment fund

I’m Trysh, Rumers mom.  I'm sure a lot of you know who my daughter Rumer is! She has just graduated this year with the class of 2017 with Honors from Century High School. Lacrosse has been her life and she is excited to have gotten a lacrosse scholarship to play for Colorado State University Pueblo’s D2 lacrosse team! When deciding what to go to school for this August she decided the Nursing program to be a good fit; hoping to use her career to help affect people’s lives for the better.

She has been extremely excited to start a new stage of her life! But her plans have been interrupted.

It started as a sore spot on her tongue that she just thought was caused from her retainer rubbing, but it kept growing and becoming more painful. She went to the doctor and they, believing it was a bacterial infection, gave her a dose of antibiotics. We thought nothing of an infection and expected it would start to heal.
Unfortunately, it kept on growing and causing more pain. She was then sent to a dentist who referred her to an oral surgeon who took a biopsy. Knowing this was out of the ordinary we felt hopeless waiting for the results as the sore got worse day-by-day. I just wanted the pain to go away and make my baby feel better again.
Then, the weekend of the 4th of July, our worst fears were confirmed; the results of the biopsy confirmed the sore is oral cancer.

Then came the shock and trying to wrap our heads and hearts abound the news. She is young, fit, and has never smoked, which is why the doctors say this is an extremely rare an unusual case. They are at a loss for words and can’t imagine where this came from.
The treatment plan includes surgery to remove the cancerous sore which will take half of her tongue. They remake the half out of a graft of skin and arteries from the inside of her forearm by her wrist. After two weeks of recovery in the hospital she will then have to go through radiation treatment for 7 weeks at 5 days a week. If her lymph nodes test positive she will have to go through chemotherapy as well.
Along with that comes the challenge of having to learn to use that new tongue to pronounce words again. The speech therapist we met is wonderful and will be with Rumer every step of the way. The radiation treatment is going to cause extreme burning of the inside of her mouth; eating is getting to be a painful challenge so she can only eat soft foods.
We are asking for any donations that people can afford. I am having to work as much as possible during this but all I want to do is be by her side. We have some money saved for her to go to school, but not enough to cover all of the treatment and school together. She has wonderful friends and family support and the surgery team has been great. Wow, this is nothing I thought I would ever be writing in my life…

We are all glad Rumer is so strong and the drive to go off to college is what is going to get her through this. I told her YOU WILL go, your plans are just off track for now.
A few months back I was dreading having to say goodbye to my baby going off to college, now that is all I want for her.
