Fund Vane's Migration Studies Opportunity

Hello Family and Friends,

Thank you for visiting my Go Fund Me page. I am currently a Graduate Candidate at the University of San Francisco pursuing a master’s degree in Migration Studies.

As many of you know, I developed an interest to work with the immigrant community because of my family history, academic coursework, and professional experience. I inherited social conscience from my parents who immigrated from Michoácan, México, over 45 years ago, and who turned our home into a temporary place for newly arrived immigrants. Their example fed my desire to help immigrants, as I applied my studies to increase my social science proficiency.

As an undergraduate student, I learned about the effect of legal status on a child’s academic performance. Moreover, I took an active role to protect migrants’ basic human rights. In rural California, I collaborated in a research group to save programs that provided health care services to migrant workers. I advocated for sanctuary cities when I argued to the Davis City Council that it is in America’s best interest to keep our communities safe from immigration enforcement agencies. During my internship, I empowered trafficking survivors to reintegrate into society by teaching them about their legal rights and empowered them to live an independent life.

After college, I worked at a nonprofit that provides free immigration legal services to low-income families, other vulnerable groups, and clients who have been victims of crimes in the United States. This opportunity gave me a new appreciation of the complexities of immigration law. Working with victims of crimes intensified my commitment to defend human rights. As a first-generation college-educated Latina, I want to use my experience and energy to actively advocate for migrant rights.

But today I need your help. I’ve financed my entire education with help of scholarships, work and with federal loans. I am currently seeking funding to finance my Spring 2019 semester at La Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. With your help, I will be able to fund the semester without relying solely on loans. I’ve thought very critically about the opportunity to study abroad in Mexico City and with the help of my professors, I've realized that my research would enrich the field of  Migration Studies through the experience of working directly with professors who actively fight for immigrant rights in Mexico City, and by simultaneously pursuing an internship at Mexico’s Association Against Discrimination.

With this opportunity, I want to help change the perception of migration with facts and empower immigrant communities. Please consider funding this opportunity for me.
