<div>For most of us, the simple joy of riding a bike is a given—a rite of passage. For Paula, it’s a world away. Paula lives with a formidable opponent: Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1.

<div>SMA is a severe neuromuscular disease that affects the nerve cells in the spinal cord, preventing them from communicating with her muscles. While her spirit is bright, joyful, and ready to race, her body struggles to keep up.

<div>This means that Paula is often an observer of her own childhood.
</div>
<div>She has to watch from the sidelines as her friends laugh and race to the corner for ice cream, or as our family prepares for a bike ride she can’t join. It’s more than just a missed activity; it’s a heartbreaking gap between Paula and the experiences that build friendships and family memories.
