To keep Italian heritage alive throughout the world, and to address the impact of the Great migration on Italian History, the Foundation for Italian Diaspora Studies has partnered with the University of Calabria (UNICAL) to broaden and intensify the research and teaching activities launched by the University’s Department of Humanities in these areas of study. Founded in 2014, the Foundation is an autonomous institution working closely with the university.
Join us in supporting the dissemination of historical and cultural knowledge of the Italian communities throughout the world, and in developing an understanding of the impact of Italian emigration on Italy.
What is Diaspora?
Diaspora is defined as a large group of people with a similar heritage or homeland who, for political or economic reasons, have moved to places all over the world. The word originates from an ancient Greek word meaning “to scatter about.”
The large-scale emigration of Italians during the 19th and 20th centuries (the “Great Migration" and post-WWII migration) was one of the most significant phenomena in Italian history. It had deep and lasting impacts not only on the lives of the emigrants, but also on the history of Italy.
Many Italians left their family traditions behind as they assimilated into new homelands across the world. As these immigrants age, elements of their Italian culture are in danger of becoming lost forever.
At the Foundation for Italian Diaspora Studies we aim to keep Italian heritage alive.
We are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. We Need Your Support To Fund:

· Assistant to the Director
· Holdings in the University library on Italian Diaspora Studies
About The Program:
While the Foundation is focused on Italian diasporas throughout the world, the first activities are dedicated to Italian American Culture and Literature and are realized through the Cultura e Letteratura Italo-Americana (CLIA) course, established for the graduate degree in Modern Languages and Literatures at UNICAL. CLIA is the first official and compulsory full course on Italian American literature and culture in an Italian public university.
The Foundation is also thrilled to share that starting in the second semester of the 2019-2020 school year, it has secured a 3-year commitment for a Fulbright Lectureship dedicated for the CLIA program.
