Elizabeth Tharpe was born July 31 1985 with a rare disorder called Trisomy 13, also called Patau syndrome, which is a chromosomal condition associated with severe intellectual disability and physical abnormalities in many parts of the body.
Elizabeth spent the majority of her childhood in and out of hospitals and surviving too many surgeries to name.
The doctors marveled as time and time again Elizabeth beat the odds and proved the predictions wrong.
Elizabeth lost her fight tonight. It is on record that the oldest living survivor of Trisomy 13 was 18 years old. Elizabeth endured unthinkable suffering for 32 years.
She was blind for the majority of her life yet at the sound of my sisters voice her face would light up and from her dark painful world would emerge a giggling happy Elizabeth. That is how we will remember our Elizabeth.
My sister struggled for years caring for Elizabeth at home. Her every resource went into finding treatments or doctors who were on the cutting edge of this horrible disease.
Insurance company after insurance company refused her a life insurance policy for Elizabeth. She was told time and time again that no-one would cover her.
She soon gave up and went on with the business of finding facilities, doctors, nurses, and advocates that would act in Elizabeth's best interest.

You didn't know Elizabeth, but If you know me, or my sister Burlene, when you see certain expressions on my niece's Sara face or In Elizabeth's brother David's laugh or her brother Matthew's nose those were all glimpses of Elizabeth. So I'd like to think you got to see and know parts of Elizabeth who was made up of parts of all of us.
