Support Vital Research for Ex-Miners Facing Life-Threatening Respiratory Diseases in Eswatini
Hi, my name is Nayab Sultan. I am a researcher specializing in occupational diseases, with a focus on those related to respiratory health. While I am not a medical doctor, I am a certified occupational medicine specialist in South Africa. My work as a researcher in this field has positioned me as an expert in the study of silica-induced diseases, including the life-threatening conditions of silicosis and lung cancer. I have dedicated over 35 years to studying work-related diseases, particularly in developing countries, and I live with my family in Vancouver, Canada.
In my voluntary role with the Southern Africa Miners Association (SAMA), I oversee the health and support of over 2 million ex-miners, informal miners, artisanal miners, and illegal miners (zama zamas) across sub-Saharan Africa, as well as their families. A critical part of my work involves researching and addressing the respiratory diseases that disproportionately affect these individuals.
In Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), former miners are facing a silent crisis. They suffer from dangerous, often life-threatening occupational diseases such as tuberculosis (TB), silicosis, lung cancer and other silica-induced diseases. These diseases are caused by long-term exposure to harmful substances like silica dust and other hazards found in underground mines. Without early diagnosis and proper intervention, these diseases can lead to irreversible damage or even death. Unfortunately, Eswatini lacks the resources and infrastructure to detect and treat both acute and chronic diseases associated with exposure to work-related contaminants.
That’s where I come in. Early detection is key to saving lives. I am dedicated to conducting essential research on the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of silica-induced diseases at the grassroots level. Your support will enable me to continue this crucial work and help those suffering in silence.
For the past five years, I have been self-financing my efforts to collaborate with various medical organizations in Eswatini, but this is not a sustainable way to make a long-term impact. The travel costs, accommodation, and logistical challenges of working in Eswatini and South Africa from Vancouver have created significant barriers, delaying vital medical interventions for sick and dying ex-miners.
Your donation will help me:
- Conduct critical on-the-ground assessments
- Meet with ex-miners and their families to understand their health needs
- Facilitate timely referrals to medical specialists
- Provide the necessary interventions that can prevent further suffering and save lives
Please help me make a difference in the lives of these courageous individuals who risked everything underground only to face devastating health consequences.
Your generosity will fund essential research, direct medical support, and the life-saving interventions they desperately need.
Thank you for supporting this life-saving cause. Together, we can bring hope and healing to those who need it most.
