FUND BOOK ON SANTA MUERTE

Donation protected

I am Dr. Kate Kingsbury ,  an Oxford University PhD, please help me to raise money to conduct the research necessary to finish writing my BOOK on SANTA MUERTE VENERATION AS FEMALE EMPOWERMENT. This book is already under contract with Oxford Uni Press, all that is needed is funding for research. I've already travelled to Mexico to start research but could not afford to stay long enough to complete my fieldwork, please help me return to Oaxaca.

If you sponsor this book, your name will be included in the acknowledgements section. If you donate $150 or more, I will personally send you a signed and dedicated free copy of the book.

I already fund raised for a fieldtrip in 2019 to 2020  which resulted in 9 peer-reviewed papers, three book chapters, and multiple posts on
skeletonsaint funding is now required to return to Oaxaca to finish the research necessary to finish writing a BOOK on Female Followers of Santa Muerte. I already have a book contract with Oxford University Press.

Giving back: I'll be giving back to the community during my stay and helping the community and those that run the chapel as I have done previously, with donations of food, gifts and money.

*** BOOK PROJECT

The oldest known prayer to Santa Muerte was one specifically for WOMEN to act against cheating men and dates back many decades.

Today still WOMEN across the Americas (from Mexico to Chicago) are turning to SANTA MUERTE as a source of empowerment, whether it is invoking her in prayer and ritual to ask her to bless their endeavours, or starting prayer groups that bring together female devotees in worship or perhaps running a small business out of their shrine to support themselves and their family.

In a world where women are continually fighting injustices: from economic exploitation, gendered violence and abuse, as the #metoo  movement has highlighted, women need new modes of empowerment. Santa Muerte reflects not only their needs but also their characters, depicting the many facets of the female persona and innumerable challenges that women face on a daily basis.

This book will counter claims in the media that Santa Muerte is just a 'NARCOSAINT', appealed to by male drug dealers. It will shed light on a population that is often ignored, due to their gender: WOMEN.

In chapters that look at diverse topics, from the mystical  —Santa Muerte rituals, dreams and apparitions to more real world stories such as the tale of an expanding shrine in Mexico that led one woman to go from an unknown local devotee to famous and powerful in the region due to her impressive, ever-expanding public Santa Muerte temple—  I chronicle and analyse the stories of the female followers of Santa Muerte and how they find empowerment in death herself.

***BUDGET

Your money will pay for:

-flight from Canada to Mexico

- accommodation in Mexico, and for a total of 3 months of research

- food during 3 months during research

- transportation: it will be necessary to hire a car as in the rural areas where I work that is the only way to get around

- miscellaneous: supporting the family who run the shrine, or sometimes buying a coffee for a devotee to get them to open up about devotion or other expenses such as this, crop up...

I am happy to send you my CV, my full research proposal and detailed budget if you want more information.

At the moment I am only a young scholar, an Adjunct Professor, and due to Covid budgets have been slashed which help young scholars, this  means I'm not eligible for a lot of funding that is limited to permanent or tenured faculty. I really need your aid.
