Fund a 'Hospice-at-Home' Nurse for 3 months
Facing the end of life affects not just the patient, but the family as well. Imagine your terminally ill loved-one has just a few more days or weeks left and are desperate to spend their remaining days at home.
The patient may simply wish to be in familiar surroundings in their last days. Anxiety about a pet may hamper their peace of mind or maybe the pleasure of their garden may lift their spirits.
Not everyone chooses to be nursed at home, but when they do the desire is extremely strong. So it is so important that their wishes are fulfilled whenever possible.
I am one of a passionate team of volunteers raising money through charity shops, events and other fundraising initiatives to support Madrugada. Covering the western Algarve of Portugal, Madrugada is a not-for-profit organisation providing round the clock end-of-life palliative care at home free of charge for those in need.
Madrugada is a member of the Portuguese Palliative Care Association.
Their clinical team of nurses and carers create a safe 'hospice at home' environment, including all necessary equipment, for terminally ill patients assessed as suitable who do not want to die in hospital.
Here in Portugal home-based national health provision is not freely available, but the need is just as great as anywhere else. Unless the patient can afford paid nursing care at home 24/7, in most cases it is just not possible.
Our goal is to raise 10,000 Euros to cover the cost of one full-time nurse for 3 months of their specialist time. With this we can extend vital support to several patients.
Apart from volunteer fundraising, Madrugada rely on bequests from those they have touched in some way. They are constantly under pressure to meet ever increasing demand as awareness of their service grows and donations of any size will assist in enabling a loved-one to choose where to be cared for in their final days.
