Help Ebola Orphans Learn New Skills - Follow up

Follow up to the first workshop- the next project is to try and get some kids off the dump and being self supporting. The idea is to set up an experimental garden using the keyhole garden system and train some of the orphans to run it supported by some scientists online. The funding should allow the project to be set up and run for a year. If we exceed that goal we will run it for longer and aim to upscale the project to start elsewhere More details to follow Life can be tough for all children, but imagine how much tougher it would be if you lived in one of the poorest countries on Earth. Imagine how much tougher it would be if your country had been hit with an Ebola epidemic and your parents had died. Imagine if your community rejected you because of fear you might infect them.  For too many children, in Sierra Leone, this is their reality. (Around 12000 children were orphaned there by the Ebola Virus alone)

What can you give to people whose lives are this tough?

One of the most valuable gifts is to develop their ability to think, to solve problems and to be able to make good decisions.

Rubbish Science is a new initiative of the charity Operation orphan . We run workshops based on three core ideas

(1) Use rubbish and refuse (Plastic bags and bottles etc)
(2) Create something useful (Fly traps, solar stills, hydroponic bottle gardens etc)
(3) Learn scientific principles (How can you use the scientific method  and design thinking to evaluate and improve your results)

These are transferable skills that may help empower some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children on the planet.

There is an opportunity at the start of November for me to run a 3 day workshop for the orphans and others in their school in Sierra Leone as well as a Train the Trainers event so that the ideas can be continued and spread through the community. This will be a pilot event in order to assess, evaluate and hopefully expand on a much larger scale.

Your donations will only be spent on the cost of travel and expenses. I am giving my time for free.  Insurance and admin costs are all covered by Operation Orphans sponsors.
If we raise more than the amount it will go to running the same project in the DR Congo later in the year.

Who am I ?
I have trained thousands of teachers and taught students across the World. I work for the Institute of Physics as a Teaching and Learning Coach and Gender Balance Officer. Rubbish Science workshops are the culmination of many years of teaching science and writing materials.  We have distilled the essentials of scientific problem solving and used the latest educational research in order to develop the program.  It has been developed from Innovation Club materials I co-wrote for the Malaysian Government. I blog at www.neilatkin.com  have a twitter presence here www.twitter.com/natkin

The funds are needed as soon as possible in order to make it happen. Any contribution would be massively appreciated. The aim is to expand this massively if this pilot project can be shown to be impactful

You will be able to see the workshops you have contributed to on Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/rubbishscience/
