Fulton's Surgery and Recovery

Fulton Pritchett: 21 years old. Musician. Sound Technician. Performer. Entrepreneur. Selfless. Talented. Loving. Family Oriented. Christian. Permanant Stage Fixture...

All of these are true of my sweet little brother, Fulton. Most people know by now, but some of you may not, so I would like to explain what Fulton has endured over the last year.

Fulton just completed a Fibula Flap surgery to reconstruct his Maxilla. In other words, they had to take a bone graft from his leg and then transfer it to his mouth to replace part of his upper jaw.

About a year ago, Fulton was experiencing pain in the sinus cavity on the right side of his face, near his teeth. After numerous appointments with Dentists, Doctors and Specialists, they discovered an aggressive benign tumor. Despite being noncancerous, the tumor infection ate away most of the bone that was holding his teeth in place. In order to remove the tumor, seven of his teeth had to be removed, as well.

Over the last year, Fulton has had to endure a tremendous amount of stress. Not having the entire upper right side of his teeth has not only taken a toll on his self-esteem and confidence, but on his emotional wellbeing and social life, as well. There were times when he chose to not hang out with friends or attend other social engagements due to feeling self conscious. Although this has impacted him so unexpectedly, he didn't let it stop him from doing what he loves...He was able to perform in four musical productions during this difficult time!

Thankfully, on 11/13/17, Fulton had a 7 hour reconstructive surgery to repair/replace the bone in his mouth. The surgeons at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta had to remove bone, muscle and blood vessels (flap) from his leg to then connect in his mouth. He has a feeding tube and a trach that is helping him breathe due to swelling. Even though the worst is over, this will be a very long recovery for him. He will remain in ICU for recovery, and then move to another room. We are hopeful and looking for discharge around 11/22/17.

This surgery was very complex and very expensive. The surgery alone is $250,000. Not only are there charges for the surgery, but there will be charges for his ICU stay, the inpatient stay, the anesthesiologist, the surgeons, the radiologists, etc. Fortunately, a portion of the charges are covered under his insurance. But there will be a huge remaining balance that will be hard for him to pay back. After he has fully recovered, he will then be able to get the 7 teeth implants...another costly procedure.

He will have a long recovery with not only his mouth/trach, but with his leg. He will be unable to walk for a while and will likely have lots of physical therapy to gain his strength  back.

This has been a very long and stressful event for our entire family. If you are unable to donate financially, please pray for my little brother and for our family as we continue in helping him recover.
