My name is Asher Weissmann. I am married to Ashira and we have a wonderful 7 year old son named Eitan. We live in and are part of a wonderful community in Baltimore.
We married in 2011, after which we moved to New York. While living there, I was employed as a drug councilor at an outpatient alcohol and drug rehab while working nights at a drop in center for Jewish recovering alcoholics and drug addicts. Ashira was working her way up a large electronics business in New York City.
In February of 2013 we found out the beautiful news that we were going to become parents. In short, everything felt like a dream come true.
However, in July of that year, after suffering painful headaches and worsening vision in my left eye, we discovered a brain tumor growing on my pituitary gland and my optic nerve.
In August of 2013, my wife was 7 months pregnant with our son, and I had to undergo an emergency brain surgery.
Unfortunately due to the location of the tumor, the surgeon had to sever my pituitary stalk, causing me to lose all hormone function.
For the next few years I was unable to work, or function normally, finding myself constantly in and out of the hospital due to illness and near constant infection.
This time was incredibly hard on our new family unit. My parents were kind enough let us move in with them, while my wife focused on taking care of our newborn son. During that time, I was on bed rest unable to care for myself, let alone my family.
The only way we were able to make it through this difficult time was with the help of selfless friends and family who literally carried us through.
After some time, my wife and I decided we wanted to attempt having another child. Unfortunately, due to my hormone deficiency, I am unable to naturally create the sperm necessary to result in pregnancy.
After paying thousands of dollars for medication and procedures, we were miraculously able to extract sperm through a painful and financially difficult procedure.
We are now beginning the IVF journey and are again unfortunately in a position where we need to request help from those that love us. The financial assistance we are asking for help for will purely go to medical expenses which our insurance will not cover.
