Eating disorders are a mental illness that affect people of all backgrounds, ages, genders, orientations, abilities, and ethnic and racial identities. In Canada, an estimated 2.7 million individuals are impacted by an eating disorder, and only 10% of those suffering receive the help they need.
Today, eating disorders constitute a public health emergency, with anorexia nervosa having the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disease.
In 2019, I was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, and after climbing an uphill battle for many years, recovery would not have been possible for me without the support of close friends and family, and help from a team of health professionals. I recognize I was extremely fortunate to have a support system around me who helped me find the light at the end of the tunnel. However, for so many individuals, this is not the reality.
Body Brave is a charitable organization that aims to make recovery more accessible for those impacted by eating disorders. It offers a variety of low-barrier services including support groups, educational courses, and professional training. Its virtual Recovery Support Program is available to individuals 14+ across Canada and can be accessed free of charge.
A life free from eating disorders is possible due to organizations committed to democratizing recovery such as Body Brave. And their impact can be further amplified with help from donors like you.
I would greatly appreciate your support in fundraising money towards this important cause and organization. Together, we can cultivate a future where those suffering from an eating disorder get the help they need.
