Our awesome school, Ferndale Upper Elementary (FUEL - grades 3-5 and 1-3 grade Montessori), is looking for donors to help us raise money for a therapy dog for our building beginning in the 2020-2021 school year. FUEL is a Title I eligible school in Ferndale, Michigan and services nearly 470 students and 50 staff members.
Our district has made the commitment to support students not just in their academic goals, but in their social-emotional needs as well. We have a Social Emotional Learning curriculum that students engage in daily during morning meeting, a K-5 mental health specialist, meditation and breathing lessons, and a number of other wellness initiatives. The mindfulness therapy dog program is the next step in our wellness journey.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 for the full program and it is a one-time only cost! The dog would then be part of our school family for years to come and would be available to students in crisis, in small learning groups, and for overall mental health support for students and staff. We have been piloting this program with training dogs and it has been incredible for our kids - we are ready to move to the next step and "adopt" a dog for our school.
The $10,000 cost includes the dog, training for staff, dog placement and training for the host family, veterinarian fees, feeding and puppy supplies, kennel and travel care, and a presentation for our community.
