Help send Izzy to Mars

Donation protected
Hi, I'm Izzy and I have dreamt of becoming an astronaut since I was 4 years old! Since then I've been mesmerized by space and looking up at the stars dreaming of one day where I'll be an astronaut living and impacting Earth somewhere within our universe. I'd love your support of my GoFundme campaign to help me take on the next level in my astronaut training that I've given the opportunity to participate in the upcoming months.

Over the past three years, my parents have worked hard to send me to Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. While attending Space Academy, I've received the introductory aerospace education to use flight simulators, SCUBA, and other space science applications. This has required travel and financial sacrifices for my family.
I am currently a junior in High School. My academic focus for high school has been to take credits in college-prep math, science, and engineering courses. I have worked hard to consistently hold an overall 3.4 GPA. My favorite high school classes have been Physics, AP Environmental Science, Honors Chemistry, Honors Biology & Engineering. I recently completed a dual enrollment course with the University of Alabama, Huntsville for Sociology, and I take weekly private Russian language lessons. I've been grateful to receive these lessons from a family member. Overall I've regularly tested highly proficient in my school standardized tests for math, science, & reading comprehension. When I have struggled, it's taught me to stay determined to overcome limitations, especially when writing essay papers or working to create better project management skills. Balancing my academic schedule and my pursuits to be an astronaut has taught me a lot about resiliency & determination. I'm a varsity member of my high school's Quiz Bowl team, where I've enjoyed competing with other students on knowledge of space science and environmental facts. During the 2018-2019 school year, our team won the Quiz Bowl Regional Championships which felt so good to be recognized for my interests!

In JROTC I have focused to achieve captain ranking and a staff position as our S-5 public relations officer. JROTC has taught me about pursuing excellence and has enhanced my time management skills. I've loved being a Girl Scout since kindergarten, and being a Girl Scout has provided me multiple STEM experiences to continue pursuing my dreams. I am currently working on my Girl Scout Gold Award which will be a website that shares STEAM career opportunities & activities for young people like myself who live in areas with limited access to STEAM programming outside their schools. It's also a place where I am documenting my journey to become an astronaut. I believe that if we have the mindset that we are already there we can all achieve our dreams, we just need the opportunities to see others like us in similar positions or pursuing similar dreams.

I know that the journey to be an astronaut isn't something many people consider to stick with after they dress up for it as a kid on Halloween. As I entered high school I dealt with my fair share of those who would want to discourage me from believing becoming an astronaut can be my reality. Besides my parents who believe in me, it was hard for me to see anyone else who had my circumstances of living in a small rural town as far away from space opportunities as possible and I started to believe maybe being an astronaut wasn't something that was possible for me. This was very disappointing to me until my second year at Space Academy when I met Astronaut, Dr. Don Thomas. Dr. Thomas is a scientist astronaut during the shuttle program. He shared with me how he was bullied and teased, like I was, in his small town when he said he wanted to be an astronaut. He told me to keep working at it and believing it was possible. He encouraged me by saying that someday I'd be the one called back to speak about my experiences in space. After his encouragement, I decided to wear my Space Camp flight suit for picture day at school.  My teachers and other students were giving me high fives and telling me they believed in me. Ever since then, I have not doubted that someday I will be an astronaut and eventually go to Mars. Dr. Thomas has become a role model to me and recently agreed to come and speak at my JROTC's military ball.

Below are the two aerospace & astronautic programs I've been accepted to and need your help to attend. Anything you can donate to fuel these opportunities will help. You can learn more about it by clicking on the link:

1. Project PoSSUM   Florida Tech, FL
- Accepted my application for their April 13-17th Advanced POSSUM Space Academy for 2020.
- This program costs $3500 which all programing but no room and board or travel expenses.
- It will teach me about principles, mission operations and suborbital instrumentation used for upper-atmospheric research.
- I'll learn about the physiological effects of space flight and G-force on the human body.
- I will learn about space life support systems and to properly perform spacesuit operations for simulated missions.
- Upon completion, I will be a certified citizen-astronaut in training. One of the youngest in the United States.

My mom and dad have worked so much to discover and find every possible way for me to continue to pursue my dream of becoming an astronaut. They are my biggest fans! However, I know that this dream is going to take more than them. It's going to take a community of others who are rallying around me.

I plan on working this summer with my local Girl Scout camp as a junior counselor to share some of the financial costs of these opportunities, but I know it will not be enough. It's why I created this GoFundme account. I'd like to ask for your donation to help me fund these opportunities. Your support in me is also showing support in future space programs and other young people like me.

Please consider donating ANY amount, it will mean the world to me and,

You will be a part of the fuel that launches me towards someday listening to the countdown on a launchpad to space. (I promise if you don't donate anonymously to make sure we send you a personal invitation!)

You will help me continue to be an influence to inspire other young people who have an interest in STEM & space careers to believe it is possible. (not just a Halloween costume)

Because of YOU - this one red light, small town girl from Pennsylvania will someday be able to come back to speak at schools and tell others to never give up on their dreams!

After John Glenn orbited the earth, Al Harrison asked Katherine Johnson, "So, do you think we'll get to the moon?" And she responded, "We're already there, sir."

*Any additional funding over the amount for Project PoSSUM raised will go towards continual training certifications in SCUBA and Pilot training.
