Frontal Flap surgery for Roxie

Hi, my name is Kirstie and I am the mum of a beautiful 19 month old girl named Roxie.

 

Roxie was born with a condition known as Asymmetrical Bilateral Blepharoptosis - also known as Congenital Ptosis.

 

Whilst the ptosis itself effects the eyelid (makes her lid droop) in Roxies case it was so severe that it completely covered her eye/pupil and not only effected her vision but also effected her posture as she was having to try and tip her head back to see out of her right eye.

 

The long term impacts of congenital ptosis are not just physical (risk of amblyopia, strabismus and issues with her bilateral vision) but as ptosis is considered a ‘disfigurement’ it’s no surprise children with ptosis are at risk of psychosocial, mental health difficulties.

 

Roxie has already undergone two surgeries at ages 4months and 12 months where surgeons implanted a silicon sling in her eyes to help lift the lid, she has also undergone months of eye patching and dilating eye drops to help protect her vision.

 

Unfortunately not only have both surgeries resulted in hospitalisation due to severe infections but both surgeries have failed and yet again Roxie is now in need of yet another surgery - this is something she will likely need throughout her life due to the severity of her ptosis.

 

Now comes the part where you can help, Roxie now has the opportunity to have a specialist type of surgery called ‘Frontal Flap Advancement’ in Malaga with the highly talented Dr Medel.

Unfortunately this surgery is NOT offered on the NHS or even in the UK.

The surgery costs are approximately £10,000 (12,000 euros) for her to have both eyes operated on, we will also need to be in the country for around 9 days for pre and post operative care and to monitor for infections etc.

 

Frontal Flap Advancement has incredible results and rarely do children need this type of surgery repeated in their lifetime which will have a huge impact on Roxies life and her future.
