From Woodbadge to Wheelchair

For over 35 years, David Wakefield has helped mold thousands of Boy Scout lives. In the 1980’s he was instrumental in organizing and managing two (2) successful Cub Scout Packs in Richardson & Garland, Texas. Continuing the Scouting tradition, through leadership, mentoring and counseling David has influenced the lives and futures of more than 1800 Boy Scouts as a leader with one of the most successful Boy Scout Troops in Richardson, Texas. As an adult leader David also participated and staffed four (4) National Jamborees and staffed numerous adult Wood Badge Training courses at which over 1100 adult scouters have been trained.
In the spring of 2017 David and Jean decided to retire and make a move to six acres west of Tyler. They found an incredible place that was formerly a girl scout camp early in the twentieth century. David’s dream was to restore the waterway traversing the property first and then build a bunkhouse for scouts. His vision was to create a Senior Patrol leadership camp which could be used by troops throughout North Texas for annual preparation meetings and other team building activities.
As they prepared to leave their home in Garland to move to Tyler on the Sunday before Thanksgiving David fell breaking his neck at the C5 and C6 vertebrae. The fall left David paralyzed from the chest down. To date, there is no medical confirmation of what level of recovery he might achieve. We continue to pray that with ongoing therapy and spinal cord specialists he will see vast improvements in his paralysis. Until now the family has resisted reaching out to all of you for assistance. As David’s medical and equipment needs mount we are asking for your help, whether it be financial, informational or just some of your time.
Some of the items we know David will need upon release from Baylor Scott and White Institute of Rehabilitation (BIR) are:
o Large Power Chair - specific to his 6’4” frame - $5,000 (insurance has covered $20,000)
o Handicap Accessible Van with electronic lift - ( 650+ lbs weight in conjunction with chair) Used $42,000 / New $75,000
o Hoyer lift – $3,500-$7,500
o Hospital bed w/air mattress $2,500 - $3,000
o 24 hour Home Healthcare Nurse - bids from 12,000 t0 $18,000 per month
o Volunteer time to stay with David when family members cannot be with him
Our immediate need to get David’s equipment is almost $100,000.00. His ongoing nursing costs may exceed $150,000.00. His dream of establishing a Senior Patrol preparation camp in Tyler is still achievable if we can get the word out about his immediate needs.
