From NYC to Orlando...With Love

Here is Mrs. Connie Arroyo, 78 years and Mr. Rafael Arroyo, 76 years, affectionately known as Mama and Papi to many.  They are one of the happiest couples around with 54 years of marriage.  No matter whatever bumps happened along the way, they always stayed positive.  But since the beginning of the summer, it has been difficult for them due to their old air conditioning unit in their home, has finally stopped working.

Their love story began around 54 years ago when they met while Rafael was working as a barber in New York City.  They married and raised 5 children together.  Rafael went on to work for New York Hospital on East 68 St. in Manhattan, in the materials management department and later was promoted to manager in the same department.  He made a promise to Connie when they married, that he would buy her a home one day.  So then he decided to take on an extra side job as a cab driver.  Besides raising the children, Connie also did odds and ends to help with the bills.  She did research and was able to find out about the homes auctioned by the city.  This was when they purchased their first little home in Jamaica, Queens, which they loved and were proud of.  Little by little, every year they both would try to make little renovations on the old home.  Years later, people could not believe it was the same home.

Within their family and around the community, they are very well known due to their generosity towards others.  When they could at every opportunity presented, they would help others and when they couldn't help, they would still find a way to help somehow.  On many occasions, when Rafael was working as a cab driver, he would come across people looking for work.  He would stop and strike up conversations with them.  After hearing about the financial struggles with their family, he would take them one by one to his office to help them fill out applications for open positions.  He would also volunteer his time to drive their church band members around to all of their events, and he continued to do this for 18 years.  That's just the way he's always been and she is also, always thinking of others.

In 2004, they decided to move down to Orlando, Florida. They sold their home in Queens and purchased their home they are living in now.  Rafael started working at the Target Store nearby because he's always liked to keep active.  Connie says he's never liked to stay still, he's like the energizer bunny!  He's always helping her around the home so much even to this day, she greatly appreciates him.  But then, unfortunately, Rafael had a stroke after working 5 years in Target and was not able to keep working.  Thank God, he is alright, just has to take it easy now.  They are trying to make ends meet, keeping up with their household bills and buying the medications they both need with their monthly income.

This is why their wish is to be able to have the funds to buy and equip their home with a new AC unit.  The home still had its original unit and was never replaced when they moved in.  Their funds do not allow them to make a big purchase like this now. They have been trying to stay comfortable with two fans in the house since the beginning of the summer.  Just imagine most of their days now, the temperature can go up to more than 90 degrees inside the home when the everyday normal outside temperature in Orlando is between 90-95. They know there are people in worst situations, so they are just blessed to be able to wake up every day and also know they still have each other.  Because of this they always stay very positive, and always wishing blessings to everyone they meet.

Connie and Rafael would greatly appreciate if anyone together with the support of their family, would like to help with their AC fund. They were blessed to have met an "angel" sent from BP Air and Heating Company here in Orlando that will be helping them with the new AC unit when the funds are available.  Any small contribution would be appreciated to help them meet their goal soon.

Please share with the Arroyo Family around the country... also friends, friends of friends, acquaintances, everyone....please, please share.  May God bless everyone.

Thank you for your support,

Connie and Rafael Arroyo
