From Factory to Free Range

Hello, my name is Simon and this is a thought that increasingly has been on my mind since I started working (with no prior farming experience) on a factory farm for pig production just over two years ago. The farm has around 100 breeding sows that are kept their entire lifetime in a barn. As you can see from my pictures from inside the barn, it is poorly lit and cramped and not a nice environment. The sows are kept in a small cage for one week while they are artificially inseminated.

After insemination they are moved to a gestation area; a small, concrete area where they spend almost four months with barely any exercise in dim light, lying in their own excrement.

After these four months they are then moved to birthing crates. Here they will give birth and spend a month in a cage feeding their young piglets.


During this time the piglets will be castrated without anesthetic and have their tails and teeth cut off and out. Any piglets deemed too small to grow quickly for profit will will be killed. After four weeks the piglets are removed from their mother and will spend the rest of their lifetime in cramped conditions in a dirty barn until being sent for slaughter.


For the mothers the whole process starts again until they are too old for producing good litters and are then sent off to be slaughtered for low grade meat.
Why am I asking for donations?
After spending the last two years working in these conditions I've decided that this should not be the future for these animals. If we are going to consume these creatures it is our responsibility to ensure that their lives are as stimulating, natural and happy as we can possibly make them. With this in mind I've acquired a lease for a large area of woodland and pasture and my aim is to create a free range, organic farm. I want the animals welfare to come first; so there will be no artificatial insemination, no piglet mutilations, no sows being in crates and confined spaces, natural weaning and not forced weaning, space for the animals to root around in woodland and fields - much as they would do in the wild.
Your donations will contribute to free sows from the factory farm to live their lives on a free range farm and help me pay for fencing, for outdoor housing for the sows, food, troughs, and storage sheds. In effect the creation of a free range farm!
My aim is to liberate the sows within the next four weeks. The sooner they are out of those awful conditions, the better. I have already rescued seven piglets that were classed as too small and weak for fast profit and were to be killed. As you can see it's a much nicer environment than that of the one in the shed.



If you can help me with this project it would make me so happy. I've really come to love and respect these animals in the last few years and they deserve a better life than the one they are destined for. On top of that it will lift my soul as the things I have seen and done in the factory farm has had a effect on me that is far from positive.
