From Croydon to Oxford

Good day everyone, my name is Leighann. I am 22 years old, currently working in the NHS in Gynaecology Oncology and grew up in Thornton Heath, South London. After years of hard work and multiple rejections I have finally been accepted to study a Masters in Clinical Embryology at Oxford University! Will you help support me in achieving this goal & allow me to help those who experience infertility?

This month, my life has changed. I have been accepted to study MSc Clinical Embryology at Oxford University. This course will give me the skills needed to work with females and males who experience infertility. It will give me working knowledge and advanced skills to carry out techniques such as IVF. I am completely taken by this area of science due the promise it holds for couples who want to bring new life into the world.

Unfortunately, although I am close to making my dream a reality, the tuition fees of £40,000  are an obstacle. I managed to show a panel of Oxford Scholars that I can make a difference in this field of Science. I am hoping that with your help I can take the next step.

I am working hard to accumulate the accommodation fees (estimated at £13,000) and the remainder of the tuition fees. If you would donate to this cause I would be eternally grateful. I am beyond honoured to have gotten this far. No donation is too small, every single donation/share/post would mean more to me than I can put in words.

I have always had the goal of wanting to work in a clinical setting, helping people. I remember being told by a teacher that I need to aim lower as the world of medicine is very competitive and it’s unlikely I’ll make it. I began to realise I don’t often see women in science and later found out black women only make up 3.8% of the scientific workforce.

6 years later I have certainly heard more of the word “No” than “Yes”. I have questioned myself & my skills, I have questioned whether it was due to my demographic, my roots or maybe because I don’t come from a family of graduates. Even after completing a BSc in Medical Physiology achieving a 1st, proving to myself I have what it takes, I was still met by multiple rejections in any attempts to take my career as a scientist forward.

I began to settle and questioned whether I really would be suitable for a career in this field. I noticed I was deflecting and avoiding all questions about what I wanted to do and what my next steps would be.

Although confidence was knocked and I questioned whether that teacher had in fact got it right, I got myself up, dusted myself off and proved to myself again that I can do it and I now have an opportunity almost unheard of for someone in my social circumstances, a confirmed place at Oxford University and I am fighting to grab it with both hands. It is so near, yet so far.

I would be so honoured and grateful if you could support me in my ambition to help people, to continue to bring hope into the lives of many who have given up and to inspire and work with the next generation of young female scientists.
