Roadways – Conquering Dyslexia

A few decades ago, Sheila Erickson put a note in a time capsule that she only recently opened.  In this note, she detailed how she wanted to develop a learning approach to help children with dyslexia not just to learn to read, but also to come to love reading and learning.  Sheila also dreamed of creating a school to deliver this innovative program to these children in need.  Fast forward to when she opened this time capsule earlier this year, and her dream has become a reality with the Roadways Literacy Studio through the generous support of families and our community.

However, the stream of children and their families who can benefit from Roadways’ individualized programs continues to grow.  As a result, Roadways now plans to open another location in Saskatoon.  To do so, Roadways would greatly benefit from your support.

To help more children, we are looking for funds to:

·         Increase the size of our building

·         Update our technology

·         Expand our library

·         Provide bursaries for those families who are not able to afford this intervention

·         Assess students and individualize interventions

·         Provide information and training for teachers across our province

Your financial support can work in many ways:

·         $15,000 will pay for one full year of Roadways instruction for a student

·         $20,000 will provide updated computers for 20 students

·         $15,000 will cover the cost of a part-time counsellor to help our students deal with anxiety and depression

·         $10,000 will cover the cost of new and current magazines and library books

A brief timeline:

• In September 2014, Sheila started Roadways Literacy Studio, tutoring 3 students in her basement.

• By September 2015, the Studio had grown to 6 students with four teachers.

• In 2019, Roadways moved to a new building, expanding to more than 20 students and 7 teachers.

• In 2021, Roadways now provides individualized programs for approximately 60 students, ranging from Grades 1 to 8.

Most Roadways students have been diagnosed with a Specific Learning Disability (SLD), which may include one or more of the following: Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalculia (other related disorders often accompany an SLD).  Since 2014, Roadways has changed the lives of not only the students but also their families as can be seen in the below testimonials from families:

"The academic, social and personal growth experienced has been amazing. It is like we have a new person in the home."

"You cannot put a price on the relief parents feel when they finally find a safe place for their children to learn and express themselves. … He can read and write and actually wants to go to school.  This is awe-inspiring for us."

"Roadways Literacy Studio has given our children the opportunity to experience success and regain some of their confidence."

Help our school and students move to its new location ! Any donation is welcome and appreciated
