Save Leverett Pond

Have you been to Leverett Pond? It’s one of the most beautiful spots in the valley for fishing, swimming, skating and boating. But Leverett Pond is in trouble. It may not be around for many more years, unless we replace the dam. Our aging and inadequate dam is in danger of failing, and invasive weeds are taking over, choking the pond and crowding out local plants that provide habitat and food for local animals. If invasive weeds are ignored, then areas of open water will cease to exist. The pond will cease to exist. The eagles, the blue herons, the geese, the otters, the beavers, the turtles, the fish, the humans—all will suffer. Replacing the dam with a dynamic structure that has a functioning floodgate is the key.  We have been using integrated pest management to control the weeds, but this is marginally successful, and lowering the water level with our new dam gives us a more long term solution. It will cost an estimated $300,000 dollars. We are hoping to raise funds from the larger community and anyone who loves the pond as we do. Now is the time to donate to save this magical spot!
