Help End the Cycle of Incarceration in Los Angeles

What is Friends Outside in Los Angeles County?
Approximately one in 100 persons in the United States is incarcerated. Friends Outside in Los Angeles County aims to end the cycle of incarceration and re-incarceration in the United States through providing services to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals, their children, and their families.

We decided to host this fundraiser as a means to support Friends Outside in Los Angeles County’s many successful reentry programs, such as:

· Employment Services
o Support people with criminal records to obtain employment. This successful program helps 3 in every 5 person get a full-time job.

· Dads Back! Academy
o Offers classes in parenting/responsible fatherhood, job readiness, healthy relationships, and financial literacy to help released dads reconnect with their families. Studies show this program reduces the chances that fathers will return to prison and also benefit their children.

· The Incarcerated Parents Program
o Helps incarcerated parents develop and maintain positive relationships with their child(ren) during and after incarceration
o An after-school program which is one of very few in the country which addresses the unique needs of children with incarcerated parents.

Hometown Connection
Friends Outside in Los Angeles County has an outstanding track record in helping formerly incarcerated people transition back into the community and their families to reunify with them. Friends Outside in Los Angeles County also has strong ties to Caltech as well. The founder, Martha Jane Dowds, met her husband at a Caltech dance. In addition, Sally Ride, who was the first American woman in space and the daughter of former board president Joyce Ride, sat on the Caltech board of trustees for 11 years and inspired many of us to pursue STEM. We are excited to fundraise for a charity with such a fantastic mission and a history deeply embedded in the Pasadena community.
