Help Preserve the Indigenous Heritage Site and Last Waterfront Forest in Troy, NY

www.friendsofthemahicantuck.org

We are the Friends of the Mahicantuck — a broad community coalition dedicated to the protection and preservation of Troy’s last untouched waterfront forest and indigenous cultural site with national significance. Our goal is to oversee the long-term preservation and protection of the land at 1011 2nd Avenue, which is currently threatened by a major development project.

We work with a broad group of local, regional and state wide organizations, partners, indigenous groups, community advocacy groups and experts.

The Schaghticoke First Nations has kindly agreed to serve as our fiscal sponsor, so all donations are 100% tax deductible.

Our Land Protection Fund

We are collecting donations for our Land Protection Fund. The fund will be used to:

- cover potential legal action and organizing costs

- become part of our efforts to bring this land into long-term preservation with a trust for all indigenous peoples, the public good, as well as the entire community.

PHASE I: Land Protection and Advocacy |

We are currently in advocate for the protection of this land through organizing, community building and advocacy. We are raising funds to support our legal and community advocacy and fund possible future legal actions in order to protect this land.

PHASE 2: A Community Vision for the Land |

Phase 2 will focus on bringing this land into long-term preservation and realizing a community vision for protecting this land.

(View more details on our website :Our Vision For 1011  )

Our vision for this unique land, ecology and heritage is it’s long term preservation and protection in trust of its original custodians or a land trust. The future of this land should be one of value for the entire community and generations to come.

For this purpose, we seek to create together with our partners

– a preservation with cultural and environmental education programs,
– including preservation and protection areas for the land’s unique ecology and archeology,
– public trails with waterfront access, and
– a community food and and medicinal garden

to protect and preserve the land and its heritage for future generations while honoring those that came before us.

Goals of Phase 2:

Phase 2 will create a participatory, community driven process to shape the proper protection and future of this land collaboratively. Alongside a community driven process, we also will:
- create and maintain trails for the public with educational markers about the significant history of this land
- host educational programs, in particular youth programs, in collaboration with the Center for Climate Communities, Schaghticoke First Nations, and local community organizations and partners
- host at least seven clean-up events with the community
- with Schaghticoke First Nation, create a food forest and medicinal garden

HELP US PROTECT THIS LAND!

We are currently in phase I of our campaign: We are raising money for our legal fund as well as to assist with the purchase this land along with local organizations to preserve, maintain and enhance this space for community use.
