For those of you who don't know, Pam was diagnosed in 2012 with Myelofibrosis. She was told the only cure is a stem cell transplant.

Things went on as normal until December 2019 when some changes appeared in her lab work. So after monitoring this new development for 3 months, Pam was put on a weekly injection medication to help reduce blasts in her blood cells.  This is supposed to increase the chances of a successful transplant. After being on this medication for a few months, it seems to be helping and the transplant is becoming a reality.

After searching for a donor, they found multiple 10 out of 10 matches (502 matches to be exact). That was fantastic news!

Pam had to have several tests done in July to make sure she was healthy enough to endure the rigors of a transplant. After a few months of injections, her medication was changed to a chemo type pill taken twice daily. Mid-September Pam began receiving radiation treatments two times per week to help reduce her spleen size. Now the radiation has reduced her platelets and hemoglobin requiring transfusions of both blood and platelets.

Pam will be admitted to the Buffett Cancer Treatment Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha on October 15, for a week of chemo and a day of radiation, followed by the transplant. She will spend another 2 weeks or so in the hospital, then will be released to the care of her husband Greg.  They have to stay in Omaha for about 100 days following the transplant to be near the hospital for frequent treatments, appointments, and in case of infections.  THIS EXPENSE IS NOT FULLY COVERED BY INSURANCE BUT YOU CAN HELP!  PLEASE DONATE HERE, OR TO THE "FRIENDS OF PAM WALZ" ACCOUNT AT JONES NATIONAL BANK, SEWARD, NE.

Pam and Greg are slowing getting accustomed to the isolation that is required, but it will be especially difficult over the holidays. Pam will not be able to work for at least 6 months following her transplant. A few months following the transplant, she will need to begin to be vaccinated from everything again, just like a newborn. So, some form of isolation will continue well into 2021.

Keep Pam and Greg in your thoughts, donate if you can, and pray that Pam fully recovers from this disease.  Thank you!
