First we wanted to thank all of our customers and friends who have supported us through this pandemic. On March 15 we started making food boxes for Veterans and at risk in our community. We have been providing about 20 meals a day during the weekdays we are open.
We were fortunate in that we used to live and still have friends in Hong Kong who informed us in early March that this virus is serious and something to be concerned about. On March 14, we decided to lock down our restaurant to everyone but employees. We shut our dining room and even our suppliers had to leave products at the back door. We have a roll-up door to our patio which we open halfway and slide food out to customers so there is no contact and a glass barrier between our staff and customers. As such, we reduced our exposure and none of our staff has fallen ill. The following week, the state ordered shutdown of all restaurant dining rooms in Michigan due to Covid-19
We have reduced our hours, and our servers are struggling. Our decrease in sales and increases in some costs are becoming extremely challenging. For these reasons we are asking for help; we are asking for funding which we plan to disperse as follows:
20% will go to our program for feeding veterans and at risk groups in our community, 30% will go directly to our employees, and 50% will go towards keeping the business open (rent, utilities, and payroll).
Indo started with my wive's dream many years ago. Melik is native Indonesian, and we met in Hong Kong 16 years ago. She became a chef, and with very little training, she progressed to the position of Executive Chef at four different restaurants she worked at. We later moved back to my home state of Michigan and she became a citizen. After working as Executive Chef at a Michigan restaurant for 6 years, we saved enough money for her to open her own place. She opened Indo in October of 2014, and we are still the ONLY Indonesian restaurant in three states, and one of the only scratch kitchens in the area. Up until recent events it seemed as though my wife had become the very definition of someone who had pursued and achieved the American dream. Over the last 5 1/2 years, we have built a fiercely loyal customer base who has been extremely generous to our servers throughout this disaster, as well as being very supportive of us in general (thank you).
We are sorry to have to ask for more, but, we are approaching an untenable situation .
