Hinksey Trail Conservation

Donation protected
Since April 2020 a group of local volunteers has been meeting twice a week to repair and improve the path through the wonderful Hinksey Heights Nature Trail (www.hinkseytrail.org). The Trail is not only part of an official Local Wildlife Site, but also a valuable local amenity for people who like to come and walk or picnic in the park. Our aim is to carry out work to the path that will enable visitors to use it safely all year round.

We are improving the building techniques used for the boardwalk so that the repairs are long-lasting and durable and applying new techniques, such as the use of crushed limestone and dried reeds from the fen to provide a dry footing during the wetter months. Repairs to the boardwalk do not come cheaply. It costs around £100 a metre in materials to replace the wooden boardwalk completely and £5 a metre simply to upgrade the anti-slip wire. In the long-term we hope to replace sections of the boardwalk with a recycled plastic structure, but the cost is prohibitive (around £300 per metre).

We are entirely dependent on public donations and grants for the materials we use and all the labour is provided by our local volunteers. Thank you for supporting our work.
