Thank you for your continued support!

Friends of Harriet L. Hartley Conservation area formed over the fall of 2019 to bring local talent, energy, and resources to the mission of preserving intertidal zones along Belfast Bay. The conservation area is a tract of tidal land just north of the mouth of theLittle River. Owners Judith Grace and Jeffrey Mabee put the area into a conservation easement to secure its undeveloped nature for future generations. Grace and Mabee named it after Dr. Harriet L. Hartley, a previous owner who deliberately reserved the intertidal zone across her original property to be enjoyed by all and protected from commercial development forever.

Friends of Harriet L. Hartley Conservation Area (FHLHCA) is aimed at protecting the intertidal zone below the Little River, the Friends of Harriet L. Hartley Conservation Area will “stake its claim” to the tidal flats owned by Judith Grace and Jeffrey Mabee and currently placed in conservation easement. “The Friends” becomes the third locally backed group to form that is concerned about the impacts siting a 900,000 square foot industrial salmon farm on the shore of Belfast Bay. The Grace-Mabee conservation easement is at the center of the current controversy over plans by Nordic Aquafarms, LLC (NAF) to build a land-based, industrial salmon-raising operation across the road on a site now owned by the Belfast Water District.  NAF intends to cover 22 acres of land with fish tanks in order to raise 33,000 tons of salmon per year. This will require the extraction of close to a billion gallons of fresh water, the withdrawal of similar volumes of salt water from the bay, and the discharge of 7.7 million gallons of effluent into the bay every day, containing 1600 pounds of soluble nitrogen as well as 400 pounds of assorted waste products including phosphorus, cleaning chemicals and other by-products of their operation.

The Friends of Harriet L. Hartley Conservation Area is a local, citizen-action organization dedicated to the protection and promotion of intertidal areas around Belfast Bay. It was also formed with the purpose of preventing the unlawful taking of private property for the placement of intake and ssidcharge pipes for this massive operation.

Located in Belfast, Maine and working out of The Little River Center, “the Friends”
advocates for the preservation, protection, and greater appreciation of shoreline areas
and ecosystems throughout the Penobscot Bay. Formed in the fall of 2019, the
organization is committed to protecting the conservation area established by Judith
Grace and Jeffrey Mabee, creators and owner of the area and the associated shoreline
property.
