Friends of Cusco-Peru Street Dogs

Let me tell you a story about our dog Cusco. We first met him on the streets of Cusco, Peru while traveling there last August. He was friendly, playful, and begging for food and some human affection. For the few days that we spent in Cusco, we fed him everyday and deflead him because he was infested and was miserable scratching all the time.
While marveling at beautiful Inca ruins it is hard not to notice overwhelming number of abandoned, homeless, and neglected dogs roaming the streets. Without laws or regulations to prevent animal cruelty and neglect, Peru is not a safe place for pets to live. If you are animal lovers like us you cannot walk by not wondering how to help those poor animals. So we started to research the topic. In the process, we found few local shelters that are trying to make a difference but shelters there are not like shelters in the USA. It's usually a small group or one animal lover solely relying on donations and volunteer help trying to make a difference in the life of street animals. By this time we already decided to adopt Cusco and take him home to USA. So, we reached out to Milagros Romero, founder of Cusco Proteccion de Animales, a local non-profit organization committed to rescuing and rehabilitation of homeless animals in Cusco. She rescued Cusco right away, provided medical treatment that was necessary before his travel, organized his transport to Chicago, and kept in constant contact with us about his condition and progress.
Cusco arrived safely at O'hare on September 21, 2017. Since then, he's made our home his home and spends his days playing with his furry brother and sister. He loves squeaky toys, chasing squirrels, and belly rubs. His medical treatment is still ongoing but his condition is not life threatening.
He was a lucky dog but many of his friends left behind on the streets of Peru will most likely never experience a warm bed, full belly or human affection.
We want to help them but their only chance is finding humans like Milagros Romero. Help us raise funds to continue this important work which includes providing affordable veterinary treatment, organizing spay/neuter campaigns , and spreading petitions that increase community awareness and attract humane government support. The American dollar goes pretty far in Peru. $30 will cover one sterilization surgery, $5 provides necessary vaccinations and basic medical treatment for one animal, $25 will sponsor one dog at the shelter for a month.
We are hoping to travel back to Peru later this year to volunteer at Cusco Proteccion de Animales. Please consider volunteering if traveling to Cusco for the most amazing and rewarding experience.
