DAUGHTER ALMOST DIES TRYING TO KEEP MOM AT HOME

My friend Alexandra, who lives in Saint-Zotique, Quebec a small town about 70 kilometres west of Montreal, is at her wits end.

Yesterday, a social worker from the CLSC gave her an ultimatum “Replace the live-in caregiver that is looking after your mother, because she is incompetent, or we will place your mother in a home!”

Her mother, Joanna Antoniadou was born in Greece and is 90 years old.  Joanna is legally blind, partially deaf and after suffering a stroke about two years ago is now bedridden and has Dysphagia (a condition which prevents her from chewing and requires for her to have a special diet).  Since then, Alexandra has been working two jobs (a full time day job & one overnight job) in order to subsidize the salary of the live-in caregiver because their asking salary is far higher than the allowance provided by the government.

In addition to this she must pay for her mother's medical expenses, which are not covered by Medicare, plus the basic household expenses. This results in a $95 a day / $35,000 annual budget shortfall.

Even though things were tight, Alexandra always managed to make ends meet until the Pandemic hit.  Since everything has shut down, Alexandra has lost her day job and in order to cover her Mother's overwhelming medical expenses she has been forced to seek daily odd jobs to meet her financial obligations.   Alexandra as a result, manages to only sleep about three (3) hours per day!

In early April she caught her caregiver verbally & physically abusing her mother and fired her on the spot.  As a consequence, finding another caregiver on such short notice and during a pandemic is extremely difficult if not impossible. With no other alternatives, her part-time caregiver ended up becoming her full-time caregiver.

On the 2nd of May, Alexandra called the nurse to report a suspected UTI (urinary tract infection), the nurse confirmed the infection and then started to criticize the caregiver for not properly hydrating Joanna.

On the 11th of May, Alexandra received a telephone from a social worker telling her that she had to replace the caregiver within a week, or her mother would be shipped to a senior’s home of their choice.  Alexandra tried to explain that it would be very difficult to find another caregiver during the pandemic and the social worker's reply was “we can't help you”

As you’ve probably heard the province of Quebec has the most Covid 19 infections and highest death rate and the senior’s homes are plagued with the coronavirus.  As a result, in my opinion, putting Joanna Antoniadou in an old age home would be the equivalent of sentencing her mother to a certain death! … and would also prevent her daughter from visiting her.

If you are in a position to help Joanna with her care, medical and nutritional needs or expenses, your generous donation or assistance would be greatly appreciated, and it will help her remain in her own home with her daughter instead of being put in an elderly  long-term care facility.

Whether you are able to assist financially or not, please take a moment to forward this message to your friends and family.
