I am Maranda Amos, and I am raising money to help fund a service dog for my child Cerenity. Read our story below.
I always wanted a large family, so I had six children, two girls, and four boys. Then I received my angel bonus baby Cerenity.
One day a friend came to me and told me about a woman who was getting ready to have a baby girl. She was living in the streets and was involved in unlawful activities. My friend was worried that the baby would be in a situation that was not good for anyone much less a child. I knew the woman and decided to go and offer her my assistance.
Cerenity was born March 14, 2007, and she and her mother were released from the hospital within 24 hours. For the next several months Cerenity's mom passed her from person to person while she was back on the streets. On June 17, 2007, my friend called and said she was taking Cerenity to the police station. I told her to bring Cerenity to me. I got Cerenity on a Saturday, and her mom didn't look for her until Tuesday. Before I took her back, I went to my pastor, and we prayed over her. Cerenity's mom went to rehab, and in rehab, Cerenity was failing to thrive. While doing a physical on her, doctors found she had a cleft palate. When Cerenity was released from Children's Hospital, she was brought to me, and her mother gave me all parental rights. Our angel bonus baby was officially ours.
Right after Cerenity was handed over to us she started at Easter Seals. She received speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Cerenity was severely delayed, had trouble sitting on her own, rolling over, playing patty cake and waving bye-bye. At 14 months Cerenity underwent facial reconstruction. She also began having absent seizures. On December 17, 2011, Cerenity’s adoption was final. A day of new beginnings in more ways than one.
On that same day, Cerenity had her first Grand mal seizure. Cerenity was later diagnosed with Autism and ADHD. She is non-verbal and has major sensory issues.
After doing research, I have found that one of my best options to help Cerenity is to obtain a seizure response dog. These service dogs are trained to assist with seizures before, during and after. They can alert someone that a seizure is about to happen. They can retrieve a phone or stimulate the person during a seizure. As the person recovers from the seizure, the dog can retrieve medications or food and also act as a brace to help the person up and provide comfort. These dogs can also be trained to assist with tasks related to physical disabilities. In Cerenity's situation, the dog can also help with social skills, communication skills, and life skills. What puts a smile on my face is to think that Cerenity will have a friend. A friend is something that a child in her situation lacks.
The service dog I want to purchase is a Pyredoodle from Doodle Doggies. The one I have checked into will be ready on March 17. The dog will then attend school at Paws4 Hope LCA. The cost of the dog and the training is $12,000 but what this dog will do for my child is priceless.
