Free Pride is a free, inclusive and anti-capitalist Pride event focused on accessibility and celebrating our community. We're now fundraising for our event this summer!
About Free Pride
Free Pride has been running in Glasgow since 2015. As Pride events around the world have become increasingly commercialised and ‘pinkwashed’ we found there was a need for a community led, grassroots pride that focused on accessibility and inclusion - so we set one up! We believe Pride should be free and accessible for everyone and our event aims to provide a space that centres the most marginalised people within our community.
We want to create a safer space for our community to connect and be platformed. We recognise the harm of police presence, state sponsors and corporations at queer events. By ensuring our events are free of these groups, we aim to enable those most marginalised - including trans people, queer people of colour, sex workers and queer disabled people - to attend and feel safe.
We believe Pride is a protest and we want to raise awareness of the issues facing the LGBTQ community, as well as providing a space to come together and take action. From the barriers to healthcare for trans people, to the systematic violence facing LGBTQ people seeking asylum, Pride should be a platform to demand and make change.
Free Pride 2021
We're raising money for our online event this summer! Free Pride 2021 will run online from the 5th-8th August. We'll have an exciting range of workshops and events available each day. Our past events have included talks on LGBTQ Sex Workers Advocacy and Resistance, Living with HIV, and Supporting LGBTQ Asylum Seekers and Migrants; and workshops on making zines, setting up your own film events, Nonbinary Activism and Skillsharing, and Disability Activism.
In order to provide a truly accessible and inclusive event, we require funding to cover access costs such as BSL interpreters, transcription, sensory aids/toys and digital access for those who need it. Digital access would include providing internet data or access to a computer lab at an in-person venue (depending on COVID restrictions at the time of the event). We also aim to pay all workshop facilitators, speakers and artists fairly for their contributions, according to Union Rates. We want to keep all of our events free to attend, to ensure our events are accessible for everyone regardless of socio-economic status.
Any donation no matter how small is appreciated. We rely on donations to make sure our events run well and stay accessible, and it's our amazing community that help us make this happen year after year. We also understand that times are hard for many just now due to covid, so please give only if it's feasible for you. Sharing the fundraiser is just as helpful!
