Freelance travel fund
Anyone who has done freelance or contract work knows that it's not easy. Even once you get a gig, the expenses often fall on you. If you're not independently wealthy, that can be a problem. So, we've come to my problem...
I am a freelance sports writer covering women's sports. I have a love for telling the stories of female athletes, stories that get far too little attention. Like many writers who focus on this sector of the sports world, it is as much about passion as pay.
I do freelance work for a few media organizations, but none cover my expenses. My initial goal is to attend the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City beginning on May 30. It will be my first trip to see the best players in college softball compete for a title. I have covered the Arizona Wildcats for the past two seasons, and am thrilled that I will be able to cover them at their first WCWS in almost a decade. I will likely be writing about the other seven teams, as well.
I will also be covering the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury over the summer, which will require me to travel approximately 200 miles round trip a few times a month. Any money not used for the trip to Oklahoma will go towards those expenses.
If you share my love of women's sports and have a few dollars to spare, the funds will help defray travel and lodging costs. The money is being deposited directly into a special account that I set up just for work-related expenses.
I originally set my target at $500, which was an extremely conservative estimate. I have already used $100 to travel to Phoenix Mercury Media Day, which was held on May 20, 2019. I have increased the target to $750, but any amount is greatly appreciated.
