“Always try” Thats one lesson my friend always taught me. So thats what I am doing, but I need your help. My friend has been wrongly incarcerated and accused of crimes he did not commit. He has been targeted (like many other males in this community) and is facing an extended period of incarceration which could potentially lead to his death. I do not not want to speak that into existence but that is the reality of his and many others that find themselves in this situation.
People who are instilled with fear are easier to control, and instilling fear is exactly what Philippines President Duterte’s drug enforcement “policies”, more appropriately said barbaric crimes against human rights aim at doing. According to police counts in the Philippines 7,025 people were killed by police in the name of “war on drugs” in the first 6 months of his election. Reports estimate the total deaths of civilians reach close to 20,000. This number can still not be determined due to the lack of legitimacy of police reports. Most of the killed and incarcerated victims are young men of a lower socioeconomic class, which begs the question war on drugs or war on poor people?
Research has found that police killings are driven by pressures from the top, and those who kill are encouraged to do so with financial incentive. These are under the table deals that go on behind closed doors, placing a price on their peoples heads. The targets of these killings come from unverified lists drawn up by corrupt government officials. Those who are not MURDERED (because thats what this is, blatant MURDER) are incarcerated indefinitely in and given no means at a fair or just legal process. Facilities that house those arrested are SEVERELY overcrowded, unsanitary, and breeding grounds for illness and disease. Rehabilitation programs are nearly non existent and ineffective. This is far from the systematic and institutionalized oppression we see in the United States THIS IS A LARGE SCALE MURDER ENTERPRISE that is tearing apart families, and TREATING HUMAN BEINGS AS IF THEY ARE DISPOSABLE.
I met Jackin on the island of Siargao where he was surf instructor (but roots are shredding in downhill longboarding) and one of the many trying to create a life on the island. He introduced me to surf and was a huge force behind my love of the sport today. When I was low on money he and his family sheltered and fed me without question welcoming me into their home as if I was one of their family. He taught me countless ways how to be a better human, and that is something I carry with me everyday. Jack is a kind and good man who despite challenging circumstances (out of his control) has always remained positive. I have seen him give when it would compromise his own situation.
I love my friend I believe LOVE can be a catalyst for change. It is my hope that this go fund me will afford him something ALL HUMANS have the right too FREEDOM.
