Margarita and her four children need immediate financial support after Margarita’s husband, Jesús, was taken into ICE custody in the early morning hours of December 1st in Athens, Georgia. Right before the holidays, when most families are looking forward to time together, Jesús’ children don’t know when they will see their father again. ICE continues to attack communities in one the toughest enforcement states in the entire country.
ICE took Jesús into custody on his way to work right outside of the trailer community where he and his family have lived for over 10 years. There is no clear reason yet as to why he was stopped, though it seems that ICE was parked by the entrance of the trailer park waiting to stop people leaving the community and most likely profiled Jesús for the worn condition of his car.
Jesus and Margarita migrated to Georgia from Mexico in 2005 and have four young children between kindergarten and 8th grade. Their family has been left without their sole breadwinner, and the children’s teachers are concerned about their health and wellbeing. Margarita said that their children left for school crying on December 1st after receiving a call from Jesús that he had been detained. Jesús had been working in Georgia Landscaping since 2005 and also worked part time afternoon shifts in restaurants to pay all of the family's bills. Margarita worries for his health while in custody because he has had diabetes for over 10 years, which he has to talk medicine daily to control.
Before migrating with Margarita in 2005, Jesús had already been living and working in the United States for several years, having first migrated when he was 20 years old in 1992 and coming back and forth over the following 6 years. ICE is currently holding Jesús at the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, Georgia, and he faces imminent deportation because he was deported once previously in the ‘90’s when immigration agents picked him up in Roswell, GA
also while on his way to work. His case will be challenging to fight legally because re-entry cases are charged as felonies, criminalizing Jesús’ efforts to be reunited with his family.
As they see what can be done to fight Jesús’ case and figure out the best path forward for their family, Margarita and her children need financial support to cover their basic expenses, which come to approximately $1,500 a month.
