Free Grace and Her Children in Kenya

Women are facing discrimination at the hands of men in power in many areas of the world.  This is no different in Kenya where Grace, a widowed mother, and her  two children are being held against their will by a predatory landlord.

My name is Maria and Grace is my friend. I am a researcher who focuses on African women so I travel to the continent for conferences and research.  I met Grace last year when I went to a conference.  She worked in my hotel and she was very nice to me while I was in Kenya. I caught a cold from a man sitting next to me, who was coughing without covering his mouth, on the plane from the US. I was terribly sick nearly the whole time I was in Kenya.  Grace helped me get better by making tea for me with fresh ginger, honey, and lime nearly everyday.  She never asked me for anything in return.  I kept in touch with her and she was recently on my mind and I spoke with her.  When I asked how she was she let me know what was going on and I felt so angry and sad for her that I wanted to do something.

She is a gentle and upstanding woman who helped me. Now she needs my help.

Grace has been furloughed from her usual job due to COVID-19.  As a result, she opened a small farm stand to help meet the basic needs of her family.

Her children are her world and they are smart and thoughtful.  They made a hand wash station for her customers to keep visitors to the farm stand safe from COVID-19.

Still, she has not been able to pay the full amount of back rent.  Grace tried to make arrangements with the landlord to move out before the unpaid rent would add up to a large amount.  However, the landlord told her that he would not allow her to move out unless she must leaves all her furniture and appliances.  He told guards at the estate not to allow her to leave with any of her possessions, even any of her and her children's clothes.  Grace and her children cannot leave unless they leave behind all they own.  This is not right, especially during a pandemic. He is trying to run the rent up very high so Grace will be indebted to him.  She is paying him small installments from the money she makes at the farm stand but the back rent is too much for her to pay.  At this rate he is enslaving her and her children.

She has sought legal help but the rent is steadily building up.

She owes four months of back rent (which is 800 dollars) to the landlord.  The new smaller place that she wants to move into is 50 dollars per month.  This means that 300 dollars would cover their rent for a few months at the new place and she can save up money from the farm stand until her regular job re-opens.

All donations will be sent using World Remit which will convert it into the foreign currency automatically and will deposit it into her account.

Please help Grace and her children to be free from this predatory landlord.  No donation is too small.  Please share as well.

Thank you for helping me to help my friend.
