More about us and our plans:

The Free From Farm shop plans to get bigger and better with all our usual edible products and many more additions in our free from bakery, deli and fresh nut milk station. Possibly even more exciting than that, we’ll be bringing you a way to shop with less waste and less plastic with our zero-waste bulk market.

We started The Free From Farm with three basic products cheese, chocolate and butter, all free from dairy, gluten and refined sugar. Since then we have expanded our product line, and in line with our ‘free from’ ethos, also pledged to make sure that all our packaging is free from plastic. Our guiding principle are delicious, healthy food, free from rubbish, with packaging that shows how much we love our planet. We are passionate about the food we produce, and we are even more passionate about giving our consumers the option to shop in a zero-waste style.

We first sold our products at a local farmers market in Guernsey (31st March 2018) and after that things went crazy for us. It appears there are a LOT of people in Guernsey who cannot find products to suit their diet due to food intolerances or preferences, or people wanting to make healthier choices. Our product range rapidly expanded and within 4 months we had a range of freshly made gluten free breads, sweet treats, drinks, spreads, CBD edibles, nut milks and nut butters. We also started selling a small range of products to make it easier for others to become a little more ‘plastic free’ – soap bars, shampoo bars and deodorants. But we still have much more that we’d like to introduce you to, and our little (but mighty) weekly stall can hardly keep up with the demand!

Our Free From Farm community is very committed and we hope they can help us make a change in Guernsey, that we truly believe will benefit the island and all its residents. Our island is small, and there is only a finite amount of rubbish that we can send to the landfill, and we are all aware of the problems that plastic is causing for our oceans. The way forward really is not a new concept at all, but going back to the original way of shopping - a zero-waste bulk market, where you can buy all your bulk foods, cleaning products, toiletries and more!

Who are we?

The Free From Farm is a social enterprise on a mission to make delicious fresh food that is free from gluten, dairy, refined sugar, and to bring you products that are supplied in a waste free or sustainable way.

Founders Anna & Ellie:

Anna

Being dairy and gluten free, I found that the alternative products on the market didn’t always satisfy my taste-buds, and were full of extra preservatives and other nasties, that I didn’t want to consume. But I missed cheese and butter, and so we set about experimenting with other recipes, getting friends and relatives to taste-test them. Many batches later and we felt that we had the flavours and textures just right.

I also have a super sweet tooth, but wanted to eliminate refined sugar wherever possible from my diet, so looked to make chocolates that would satisfy my chocolate cravings, but were a much healthier option!

We live in a world of convenience. We live fast paced lives, our food and household products have been ready made and packaged to reflect this. But unfortunately, it is making us unhealthy, and it is damaging the environment around us.

Due to the power of social media, we are all becoming more aware of the damage that single-use plastics are having especially on our oceans. We all need to work together to create change, to ensure a sustainable future for Guernsey, our planet and future generations.

Ellie

In our daily lives we couldn’t believe how much recycling we were accumulating, and so much of it seemed unnecessary. We spent a lot of time trying to find alternative and better options, but getting frustrated that there wasn’t somewhere in Guernsey we could go to do a completely waste-free shop. The solution seemed simple; we needed to set one up ourselves.

We don’t see a zero waste shop as a new concept, but instead going back to market style shopping, where nothing is wrapped in plastic, and instead you bring the containers you wish to refill, and carry your shopping home in, or purchase reusable glass jars from the shop that you can bring back and refill time after time.

We apply Bea Johnson's 5 R’s to our business model - refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, rot (compost), so we can make the most of our resources. With Guernsey’s new household waste rules coming in late 2018 there couldn’t be a better time to try and reduce the waste you produce. We’d like to make it easy for you to do that!

What we need to fund:

Expanding our product range: Our pop up operation has out grown our expectations very quickly and there is a growing demand for ‘free from’ products and a way to shop plastic free. We’d love to fill that demand and think we’d rock at it – one problem is that we don’t have access to start up capital. We have a lot that we’d like to introduce you to, from a full range of gluten free breads and cakes, local kombucha and homemade Guernsey Apple Cider Vinegar, reusable menstrual products, cotton pads and more. Our aim is to ensure that we source as many of these products from Guernsey as possible to reduce the air miles, and to support small local business’ who want to introduce sustainable products to the market.

Investing in Equipment: We are starting from scratch really. We have a couple of blenders at our ‘home farm’ but that’s about it! Gravity bins and fusti’s (that’s the ones that hold the bulk liquids), ovens, fridges, shelving, tills and all the other manner of equipment is needed.

Investing in stock: It might sound obvious but to be able to have a shop we must have stock to sell.

How much do we need?

We can get off the ground with £25,000 and grow each section organically after that. If we had a dream figure it would be £45,000, this would enable us to stock 90% of everything we’d like to do.

When do we need it by?

We have a shop ready and waiting for us, we would love to be up and running there by Christmas.

Why we need your help

We want to give people an option of sustainable shopping, but this can’t be done without your support. We are not retail giants and we don’t have financial backers but we do have you, and you have already shown us how much you support what we are doing with your weekly visits and chats with us. Help us make that next leap and we will reward you with an abundance of tasty treats!

To thank you for supporting us, and helping us get our shop off the ground please choose one of our perks in exchange for your donation.

Support a revived way of shopping which won’t litter our island and ocean, and will make a difference in people’s wallet and wellbeing.
