FREE DELAND! Mandated Masks are Govt Overreach!

Donation protected

On Thursday, June 2, the DeLand City Commission, with a 4-to-1 vote, passed an emergency ordinance requiring people to wear face coverings while in indoor businesses in the city.  For violating the ordinance, people will incur a $25 fine on the first offense, $50 for a second offense and $100 for a third and subsequent offense.  The new rule also requires businesses in the city to post notices telling would-be patrons that a mask is required for entry.

More than 30 citizens signed up to speak at the emergency meeting, nearly universally against the proposal.  Some people discussed how mask mandates go against their religious principles and beautifully quoted their scripture. Others spoke about the disharmony and division mask mandates will cause, and how city businesses will suffer even more losses than they already have. Some folks quoted recent journal articles and brought up the conflicting information shared by public health organizations.  Others focused on the rights of residents to be free, and to run their personal business and private businesses as they see fit, and, most relevant, the questionable legality of mandates.

The commissioners took a 5 minute recess, and the moment they began discussions upon their return, it was crystal clear they never had any other intention but to pass a mask mandate for the city of Deland.

There was immediate reaction of shock and disgust from the crowd.  A Deland resident asked how they could rule so quickly without taking time to consider the public comment and review the written materials they received, but the public was immediately silenced and told that the Commission can do what they want and everyone needed to be quiet.

This type of governmental overreach is unacceptable.  Attorney and Florida State Representative Anthony Sabatini agrees.  Mr. Sabatini has filed multiple lawsuits in various counties and cities across Florida seeking to strike down face mask mandates in those municipalities, denouncing such rules as unnecessary and unconstitutional.

"Masks," Mr. Sabatini says, "should be left up to individuals and businesses. The government does not really have a crisis it needs to address."   And even it it did, it should not be addressed with what he considers an unconstitutional abridgment of people’s rights by requiring them to wear masks in public.  “It does bother me that people try to silence and stop the debate and seek to inhibit conversation about these types of policies and try to vilify anybody who actually questions it. ”

The residents of Deland are filing suit against the city to repeal the mask mandate and end the oppressive government overreach.  Brian Dolato, US Marines veteran, and Matthew Johnson, US Army veteran and local small business owner, will be listed as the plaintiffs in this case.  We will be retaining attorney Anthony Sabatini and need your help with legal fees!  All donations will go directly to paying Mr. Sabatini's fees.
