Free and safe water for Long Alango (Borneo)!

Donation protected
Dear family, friends and adventurous souls of this world,

The problem of the world water crisis is solvable if we work together, and we can start with just a water filter in our backpacks.

I am reaching out to you because I need your help to give the people of Long Alango access to free and safe water.

Access to potable water is often taken for granted. Here in Australia, for example, tap water is drinkable and offered to you for free at every coffee shop and restaurant. This was a privilege I didn't have when living in Brazil or travelling to some other countries, even though safe, accessible and affordable water is recognised as a human right by the United Nations.

This realization took me to an experience of a lifetime in Borneo, Indonesia. Inspired by a not-for-profit organisation called Waves for Water (W4W), I found a way to help eliminate the water inequality gap. W4W has an efficient solution for the global water crisis, and gives us - YOU and I - an opportunity to get involved.

WHAT IS THE W4W SOLUTION TO THE GLOBAL WATER CRISIS?

W4W supplies clean water via portable water filtration systems which are cost effective, compact, and provide enough safe water for daily needs. Each filter has a useful life of approximately 3.7 million litres (25 years = 4 people/family, 50 to 100 litres of water per person/day).

Through the volunteering help of consciously-minded travellers, the solution is implemented in communities all over the world. By simply bringing along some filters, these volunteers have a chance to help people who do not share the same privileges.

WHAT DOES YOUR DONATION ACHIEVE?

Long Alango is a remote jungle village located in the Indonesian part of Borneo and home to about 800 people who struggle with accessing drinkable water. In 2019, I went trekking there and thought “what if I took some W4W filters with me?” - I could easily fit a few of them in my backpack.

I arrived in Long Alango just in time for Christmas celebrations and was welcomed by my hosts, the Lie family. The next day I gave them 2 filters and showed them how the system works using non-potable water from their local river. The smile on their faces when they saw clean water coming out of the filter is something I will never forget.

Those 2 filters meant:

- SAVINGS of around 15% of their monthly income (approx AUD 280.00 per adult);
- FREE and CLEAN water to grow fruit and vegetables to supplement their income;
- REDUCED weight to carry in their backpacks when in the jungle over multiple days;
- LESS litter out of the window or in the river (no recycling/rubbish collection).

It is profound how much can change in your life by having access to safe water so we organised a demonstration to about 30 family representatives - we believed the filtration system could benefit others in the village. As my heart had hoped, their reaction was as positive as the Lie family’s.

At that very moment I understood I had found a way to communicate with the people I meet during my adventures, and also how WE can participate in this world a little more consciously

So, I would like to invite YOU to join ME on a new adventure, and help me ship 30 filters to my friends and their families in Long Alango! The COVID-19 pandemic won’t let me deliver them in person this time but that won’t stop us from making a difference this coming Christmas.

YOUR FUNDS WILL HELP WITH THE PURCHASE OF:

- 25 x MVP Point One Filters  @ USD 35.00 each = USD 875.00 (approx AUD 1,315.00);
- 5 x Renegade Filters  @ USD 35.00 each = USD 175.00 (approx AUD 275.00);
- Shipping costs @ USD 92.41 x 3 = USD 277.23 (approx AUD 430.00 - 3 shipments are required due to the Indonesian customs restrictions);
- Estimated AUD 85.00 will be absorbed by GoFundMe as an Admin Fee.

These 30 filters will be delivered to approximately 20 families and to the local school and hospital. If we surpass the fundraising goal, extra filters will be purchased to support more families and growers in Long Alango and in the nearby villages.

The water crisis can be solved through a collective effort! I'd be forever grateful if you raise your glass of water with me, by making a donation, and together we toast to global water equality!

Updates on the purchases, shipments and delivery will be provided as often as possible. Please be mindful that internet connection is unreliable and infrequent in Long Alango but I will make sure to keep you informed about every stage of this campaign.

The below update is from 30/12/20:

It is with much joy and gratitude that I write to inform you the 40 filters we purchased arrived at the village on 25/12/20 after a 40h boat trip up the river with Narsi Lie.

The demonstration (with buckets sourced locally) and distribution of the filters happened on 27/12/20 and were organised by Narsi and Nopel Lie, benefiting 30 families, the local school and hospital.

Along with the pictures, Nopel Lie told me the villagers could not believe they were receiving such gifts and when the water started flowing out of the filters, smiles, laughter and awe shined through!

I have added some pics here so you can see a little bit of what I am talking about:

In a year filled with uncertainty, one thing's for sure: I couldn't have done this without YOU. There is no one person or group out there that's going to solve our greatest challenges, it is up to ALL OF US. Change is powered by YOU and I and the urgency of the global water crisis requires ALL OF US, giving at every level, in whatever way we can.

I want to give a shout out to all of you who have supported me on the journey to give the people of Long Alango access to clean water and (unknowingly) helped me come to my own as a human being. Another big shout out goes to the W4W team (especially to Adam Troy) and to Yohana Lie who have been so helpful and patient and have played a vital role in getting our filters delivered by Christmas!

Much love and light to everyone in 2021! May it be a year full of positive challenges, of dreams come true and of giving - as for those who give with joy, that joy is their reward (Gibran, 1923).
