Free Alejandra from Immigration Detention!

Help Alejandra Leave Immigration Detention!

We are fundraising to post Alejandra's bond so that she can get out of detention and reunite with her aunt in Colorado!

Alejandra is a 22 year-old lesbian from El Salvador. She fled her home due to persecution for her sexual orientation and came to the US seeking asylum. Since arriving in the US, she has been incarcerated in a privately-run, for-profit detention center in Eloy, AZ. Like too many other asylum-seekers, she has been given an unjustly high bond.

A judge has set Alejandra's bond at $20,000, which is far more than her family could ever afford. Bonds given in the courts in Eloy are some of the highest in the nation.

Getting Alejandra out of detention means that she can continue to pursue her asylum claim with the support of her family and her community.

We have been visiting with Alejandra as volunteers with Mariposas Sin Fronteras. Alejandra is a wonderful, friendly, outgoing person who is quick to smile and share a joke. She loves music, and lives for moments when we can talk to her on the phone and play her favorite songs over the line for her to hear. We have been inspired by how hard she has worked to keep her spirits up, and how she has rooted for the other women in detention with her.

We are trying to raise the full amount of her bond, so that Alejandra doesn't have to use an exploitative bail bond company. If we are unable to raise $20,000, Alejandra will be forced to use Nexus, a company that will then require her to pay hundreds of dollars a month (that she will never get back) for the "privilege" of wearing an ankle monitor. Nexus is currently under investigation by the NY Attorney General, who is trying to have the Nexus CEO arrested. **

Every day that she stays in detention CCA, the company that runs Eloy, makes a profit. In 2017 CCA and Geo Group combined had annual revenues exceeding $4 billion. Detainees have the "option" to work for $1.75/ day in Eloy, doing full shifts in the kitchen, cleaning, or sewing. Detainees are not given enough food, forcing them to have to buy extra food from the commissary.  Making phone calls is expensive, and medical care is inadequate.  Suicide and death rates at Eloy are some of the highest among prisons in the country.

Alejandra is looking forward reuniting with her aunt in Colorado, and being able to live her life openly and participate in her community.  She hopes to be able to return to school when she gets out.

Let's help Alejandra get out of detention and reunited with her loving community!!!

About us: We are Katie and Carolyn, volunteers with Mariposas sin Fronteras. MSF is an organization in Arizona that supports LGBTQ people affected by immigration detention and fights to end detention. We met Alejandra through the Mariposas sin Fronteras visitation program at Eloy. Once the money is raised, Katie will be writing a check to DHS for Alejandra's bond, and going to the local ICE office to deposit it. Alejandra will be released immediately after that.
