HISTORY
Tunstall Robotics (Team 5950 ) is an FRC (First Robotics Competition) team. We were founded in October of 2015 in the rural town of Dry Fork, VA. We were started as a way to bring technology/engineering into our high school. We give students a place to go if they are not too interested in sports. We made it through our first and second year and placed high. During our first year, we won the Rookie All-Star Award and the Highest Rookie Seed Award. Last season, our second season, we won the Judges' Award. We also placed high enough to compete at the District Championship in Richmond, VA. Now, during the summer of 2017, we have kept ourselves busy hosting fundraisers and school visits. Robotics has bonded everyone on the team and we became a "robotics family". We all work very well together and cannot wait for the next season.
WHAT IS FRC?
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is an international high school robotics competition. Each year, teams of high school students and mentors work during a six-week period to build game-playing robots that weigh up to 120 pounds. Robots complete tasks such as scoring balls into goals, flying discs into goals, inner tubes onto racks, hanging on bars, and balancing robots on balance beams. The game changes yearly, keeping the excitement fresh and giving each team a more level playing field. While teams are given a standard set of parts, they are also allowed a budget and encouraged to buy or make specialized parts. FRC is one of four robotics competition programs organized by FIRST. Our robot, pictured below, is named: Ozotron 3000.
OUR MISSION
The Trojans: Team 5950's mission is to allow students to express themselves and be creative in a safe environment while learning the basics of STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. We teach students how to set goals, make a plan, and initiate the plan to make a complex and robust robot. We strive to inspire our students, as well as community members, to get interested in technology and become science and technology leaders.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
We attend and host many events out in the community. These events are to show community members what we do and how we are shaping the future of students AND the workforce. We host fundraisers, school visits, spaghetti dinners, pancake breakfasts, and many more.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Last year alone, we spent ~25,000 dollars on robot parts, equipment, entry fees, transportation, and hotels. This is a very hefty cost. We host many community events to help fund our team such as a pancake breakfast, car washes, spaghetti dinners, etc. While hosting these events does prove to be fun and effective, we decided we should also host a "GoFundMe" for family members and supporters that would love to help out, but are not local. You are welcome to donate any amount you would like. Every cent will go into robotics. This includes: parts, transportation fees, food, and registration costs. We appreciate every person that helps us out.
