Frances Winters' story is a story of strength, perseverance, change and tragedy.
Frances, in her 53 years of life so far, she has overcome the intergeneration trauma of the Residential School system to go on to become an outreach worker and take care of 2 children with mental illness. Her life is being jeopordized of being cut short on the diagnosis that she has Stage 4 Cancer.
Frances is a proud Inuit of a small town in Labrador. At her wedding, she wore traditional Inuit attire as well as her beret from her military service. In that moment she had simultaneously fought to keep her heritage alive and her service to Canada as milestones to her proud and respecting way of life.
She spent 8 years of her life as an Outreach Worker working with the homeless and 6 more as an Addictions Counselor dealing with and aiding those in most need of help. People who had overcome addiction and other more troubling difficulties see and will always see her as one of the last people left listening and she had given them the strength to turn it around. And now she needs our help.
She has given her whole life until recently when the loss of 5 loved ones in a short span and the beginning stages of cancer had proven too much. She's been unemployed for the past 2 years and now with the diagnosis, will need help on the fight of her life. The medical and unforeseen expenses will be hard for the family to take on with only 1 member of the family able to work. Her working son will be taking temporary leave of work and flying cross country to take care of her in these trying times.
