I'M SHAVING MY HEAD!
After an incredibly challenging and difficult 2017, for me personally and for a number of people I love deeply, I have decided to put a positive spin on the negativities…and take action.
What better way to make a difference than to raise money for a service I believe in, that supports the mental health and wellbeing of youth and, at the same time, try something exciting and new.
On March 17th I will be shaving my head, donating my hair and at the same time fundraising for headspace –a free professional service that helps youth (aged 12 to 25) who find/have found themselves in situations where they need guidance or support for their mental health, physical wellbeing, addictions, or who need advice around career and life skills.
YOUR DONATION
I know that your donation will make such a positive difference in someone’s life… and you get to join in the fun as I take a deep breath, and shave off close to 18 years-worth (60cm!) of long curly hair…
The silence around mental health and the lack of funding for vital services, especially for young people can, unfortunately, have tragic or life-long consequences. Properly funded services that offer open, accessible non-judgemental support literally change and save lives.
I am a strong advocate for destigmatising mental illness and for normalising conversations around mental health/wellbeing. What better way to break the silence and start a conversation than have people say, “My goodness you’re tall! Why don’t you have any hair?”
The charities I’ll be donating to are:
VARIETY AUSTRALIA – HAIR WITH HEART (www.variety.org.au/get-involved/hair-donation ): This is who I’ll be donating my hair to! Donations of hair collected by Variety are sold to be made into specialised wigs for children that have lost their hair due to medical conditions such as alopecia or cancer. The funds raised through the sale of the hair are used by Variety to provide equipment (e.g. wheelchairs and communication aides) and services (e.g. occupational/music therapies) to children in need.
HEADSPACE (www.headspace.org.au ): This is who your donations will be going to! headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation, providing early intervention mental health services to 12-25-year-olds, along with assistance in promoting young peoples’ wellbeing. They cover four core areas: mental health, physical health, work and study support and alcohol and other drug services.

My name is Frances Rowlands, I am a 22-year-old student from Melbourne. On March 17th 2018 I will shave my head, donating my hair to Variety Australia and celebrate by giving the money raised through this GoFundMe page to headspace .
