Campbell Feehan, owner of Security Solutions NL, is seeking your assistance in raising money for Frances Roberts, a metro St. John's child with a rare disorder. The following letter is from her family.
"I am writing this letter to you regarding our twelve-year-old daughter Frances Roberts. When Frances was almost two years old she was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome. Rett Syndrome is a rare neurological and developmental disorder caused by a mutation on the X chromosome and occurs almost exclusively in girls. Children with Rett Syndrome grow and develop normally then after a period of time start to decline. There is no cure for Rett Syndrome and because the disorder is rare, very little is known about it. What is known about the disorder is that children develop symptoms that affect every aspect of their daily living.
As of today, Frances is totally dependent upon us for every aspect of her daily routine. She is nonverbal, making it impossible for her to communicate with us. She has no abilities of purposeful and proper hand movements, including grasping or touching things, which restricts her from feeding herself or even helping herself up from a fall or sitting position. In the last year, Frances has struggled with a number of complications. She has been recently diagnosed with epileptic seizure activity, and in the last year Frances has really struggled with her walking ability. Her balance, coordination, and posture have declined drastically because of the disorder and also because of her scoliosis. This has made her dependent on her wheelchair. Frances can no longer get in and out of bed or a vehicle unless being carried physically by someone.
Our main priority is to make sure that Frances is accommodated in the most safest and comfortable way possible. We have made numerous renovations to our home for this reason. We have installed a walk-in shower with proper seating, a ramp has been placed to the front of our home, and we also purchased a stair lift.
As of now, we will need to purchase a wheelchair accessible vehicle. This vehicle would be a huge benefit to her. As we are all aware, purchasing a vehicle is costly. The price of a vehicle equipped with the necessary lift will cost approximately $60,000.00.
Right now we are starting the process of fundraising to help with the cost of purchasing this vehicle for her. We are also asking that you would consider donating to this worthy cause. Any donations would be gratefully appreciated by us all to help with the cost involved.
