 You may think that we have little to fear because the statements targeted by these proceedings may seem entirely ordinary.

 Yet Dora Moutot was fined €4,500 in May for “public insult against a group of people on the grounds of their gender identity,” following comments she made during a debate on France 2. The relevant excerpt is included in the video accompanying this fundraiser. She is, of course, appealing the judgment.

 Nevertheless, this conviction illustrates the current state of freedom of expression in France on this issue. It also demonstrates that the legal risk is very real, and that at least one of the six lawsuits brought against us by Familles LGBT could result in a conviction.
