As you most likely know, Hugh Flaherty died in the early morning of Sept. 26 after battling heart disease for over four decades. He took his leave in the place he loved best -- home -- with the person he cherished most -- Dorothy. And it is in his memory and for Dorothy that this fund was launched.
The goal of the Hugh Flaherty Memorial Fund is to provide Dorothy with enough resources to stay in their one-bedroom condo as she learns to adjust to this new world order. Losing her life mate was devastating. Leaving the community in the senior complex where she and Hughie sank their roots over 10 years ago would be another huge loss. While her daughters support her as best they can, finances stretch only so far. Hence, it takes a village.
As a representative of the Flaherty fan club, I have organized this fundraising effort. My name is Sue Hertz and I've known the Flahertys for over three decades, first as a friend of Paula's, and then as something of an adopted daugher of Dorothy and Hugh. A little part of me died, too, when I heard of Hughie's passing. When mulling the best way to honor him, I, along with several others and with the blessing of Paula, Martha, and Annie, decided that securing Dorothy's home, at least for the short term, would best serve his memory.
Any donation would be deeply appreciated. Thank you for honoring Hugh by caring for his Dorothy, who has given so much joy and hospitality to so many.
