Raise funds for a student nurse placement in Cambodia
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Mia and I am a second year mental health nursing student at Teesside University.
I have been lucky enough to have been chosen to travel to Cambodia alongside 11 other student nurses in partnership with the charity Transform Healthcare Cambodia.
This once in a life-time trip is taking place the 26th June - 12th July. During this time , myself and other student nurses, across all nursing fields will be volunteering in different hospitals such as the Battambang Referal hospital and the Roka Communriy Hospital in order to make a positive change to the healthcare system in Cambodia. The help we provide is both clinical and educational as the charity endeavours to educate our Cambodian colleagues; as well as supporting those in rural areas.
The Khmer Rouge regime, led by Pol Pot from 1975 to 1979, was a brutal period in Cambodia's history. The regime wanted to return the country to ‘year zero’ and killed any intellectuals or professional people such as doctors, nurses and politicians whilst also killing millions of ordinary Cambodians who were forced into brutal labor camps, where many died due to starvation, overwork, and abuse. Sadly, it is estimated over 2 million Cambodians died during the regime and was one of the worse mass genocides of the 20th century.
The long-term effects on healthcare in Cambodia are still felt today. The country struggled for years to rebuild its healthcare infrastructure after the fall of the Khmer Rouge. It faced a severe shortage of trained healthcare professionals, as many had been killed or forced into exile. Today, while Cambodia has made significant strides in improving healthcare, the legacy of the Khmer Rouge still affects the sector, with ongoing challenges in access to quality healthcare, particularly in rural areas.
Whilst Cambodia has seen steady economic growth over the past two decades, international aid remains an important factor in addressing persistent issues such as poverty, inequality, and infrastructure development. All donations make a difference to improving the lives of the people of Cambodia.
Donations from this page will be used towards making the trip possible, with any excess being donated directly to the charity to use as needed.
I am extremely lucky and excited to be a part of a very special opportunity. I am very grateful for any donations and would like to thank you in advance for making the charity’s work a possibility.
Thank you again!
