"Benjamin's Hope to Walk" is raising funds to give Benjamin a chance to live an independent and pain free life. Please help us to make this a reality.
Benjamin is our 4 year old son. He suffered from a lack of oxygen at somepoint during his birth and as a result was diagnosed with Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy at the tender age of 7 months old. Spastic Cerebral Palsy creates spasticity-or tightness- in certain muscles, and affects ones motor function and the ability to coordinate muscles properly. Diplegia means that ones legs are primarily affected.
Cerebral Palsy affects the muscles and a person's ability to control them. The brain injury that occurs from the lack of oxygen, affects motor functions, balance, posture, coordination and spasticity of the limbs. Benjamin's muscle tone and spasticity have continued to increase as he has gotten older, which makes it extremely hard for him to coordinate his muscles. Some of his muscles are continually contracting, which causes stiffness, and alot of pain.
We are trying to raise money for Benjamin to have a life changing operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR). We are hoping that Benjamin can have this operation in April 2015 at St Louis Children's Hospital in St Louis Missouri, USA. by internationally renowned neurosurgeon Dr T.S. Park. Dr Park has been performing this surgery for over 25 years, and has performed over 2600 surgeries-with a 100 % success rate. The Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy procedure consists of locating the nerve roots in the spine that are spastic and cutting them. By doing this, Benjamin's spasticity would be permanently eliminated.
We are hoping to raise $85,000.00 for the surgery and for the cost of post-operative physiotherapy and rehab. This operation would give Benjamin the opportunity to move without restrictions, to walk independently, and be pain free! Please help us make this dream possible.
