While visiting Petra we experienced some of the worst animal abuse and neglect we had ever seen. While touring the site we spotted a litter of puppies hiding in a cave filled with trash and undigestible leftovers. The puppies had no water, no owner, and no mother, suffering in over 100 degree weather. They were covered in ticks, feces, and were severely dehydrated. One of the puppies was vomiting and still trying to eat garbage because she was so hungry. Another puppy had terrible diarrhea and extreme fatigue, barely able to get up and move. We left the puppies with clean water and bananas, and broken hearts.
We couldn't sleep that night or live with ourselves if we didn't take action. The next morning we returned to the site where the puppies were and operation rescue began. We put all four of the puppies in our backpacks and hiked two miles in and two miles out of Petra.
We arranged transportation for the puppies to be taken back to Amman, Jordan, four hours away, where we could get them treatment.
The puppies are currently with the vet being cared for and being monitored in preparation for the next steps in their treatment regiment. They will all be getting rabies vaccines, deworming medicine, baths, tick removal, passports, and anything else they need to get them healthy and safe. Once they are healthy and cleared for travel, we will be bringing them back to New York, where we will be going through the procedure of getting them ready for adoption.
Us on the other hand, were suppose to be getting on a flight to Israel to continue our tour of the Middle East. Instead, we chose to do what was right and cancelled our trip to stay with the puppies in Amman, Jordan.
This turn of events was financially unexpected, but we went with our hearts instead of our wallets. It will cost approximately $625 per pup for vet care and travel back to the states.
If you can find it in your hearts to help these beautiful innocent puppies who deserve so much better, with any amount of donation, we would be so grateful for your contribution. Every little bit can make a difference!
Let's get these puppies back to New York and into their forever homes!
