Our daughters are in trouble and it seems to me to be only getting worse. The statistics are overwhelming: girl suicides are up 50%, ER visits are up 55%, depression is up 60%, self-harm is up an astonishing 166%, and social media is bludgeoning whatever confidence our girls’ had left. I have seen this with my two wonderful daughters and many of their friends as well. This is deeply personal and profoundly saddens me. But, we dads can mobilize and reverse this scary trend in 2020.
Today more than half of girls believe they can not measure up to boys by the time they are teenagers. The more we force girls to be compared to boys, the more we do not encourage girls to explore their own nature, the more we are forcing girls to survive in a cultural norms and belief systems that are increasingly toxic and repressive to their innate female nature and genetic makeup. The more we drive girls to lose self worth and self belief. Feminism has blamed men for the situation. Society blames girls mental illness on the girls themselves, claiming that their reactions are pathological, neither of these finger pointing solutions are correct. I recently started collaborating with a team of women from Girlapproved who discovered the root cause. It is easy to correct and even inexpensive.
The root problem can be summed up as this - Society has assumed that men and women have identical minds, and they don't. This single assumption has led society to perpetually force girls to seek her worth in a system that makes her deny both her unique gifts, her full potential, as well as unique intellectual ability to contribute to science, engineering, and cultural design. For thousands of years this fundamental right -- the means to know thyself, to determine your potential, and have the liberty contribute all you were given to yourself and society -- has been denied girls. Denial of this natural right creates profound suffering in girls and human evolution at large.
Girlapproved findings and mission resonated with me as a father and as the COO of Sustainable Brands. They found a way to fix what our present societal ‘system’ cannot: to give our girls the unrestricted ownership over the innate capacity of their minds. Their work was one of the winners of MIT’s Future of A.I. Awards in 2019 proving that the female mind was an unharvested resource to both understand nature more deeply and expand humanity’s ability to solve hard problems.
Girls need their dads to step in and give them a chance at the what the system has not -- the fundamental right to know their own true potential, independent of male approval. My six-minute video, which barely scratches the surface, sets the context, outlines the challenge, and proposed the solution: Girlsmart School associated with GirlApproved. GirlSmart School will be a free, non-profit, open-source curriculum for girls (and boys) worldwide.
