Foster Dad Shane Ricks Fire Tragedy

Last night one of Greater Birmingham Humane Society's (GBHS) most devoted and incredible staff members Shane Ricks, and his girl friend Devon, lost everything they owned in a tragic house fire.

Devon and Shane are volunteers in our foster program and they foster for not only GBHS but other rescues. Devon works at a local vet clinic. Devon was injured trying to save their pets and foster animal babies. Thankfully she is going to be fine, but the trauma of losing their pets is more than any of us can bear.

Shane and Devon had just started a new chapter in their lives. Like many of us who rescue animals, they dreamed of having a farm and land. Shane was fortunate to get a large trailer and was so happy when he was able to place it on his father's land. Shane and Devon rescue and rehab lots of harder to adopt animals and special needs cases. They were so excited to own this home and enjoy plenty of space for working with and exercising their foster babies.

Last night a fire broke out and within minutes their trailer was engulfed in flames. Devon kept going back for animals and finally had to break through a window to keep from being burned. They lost many animals and are haunted this morning by their inability to save them.

Shane has helped so many people in our community. He and Devon are always willing to go the extra mile for anyone who has found an animal that needs help. I have witnessed Shane and Devon go without food to provide for their animals. You may have seen Shane or Devon out at local places with these animals trying to find them forever homes. They were totally devoted to the cause of giving animals a second chance at life.

Please help us as we try to raise money for them to replace their trailer and belongings. I've never done a GO FUND ME and I don't even know where to begin to set a goal so I started with $5,000.

I know it will take more to get them a trailer. We would like to take furniture and household goods donations, but right now they have nowhere to store these kinds of items.  Until we can get them a home, we simply have nowhere to put these things. I will make sure all of the funds go to the purpose for which they were raised and we will provide updates on their progress.

It is not their fault, accidents happen and bad things happen to good people. But the guilt they are feeling this morning is enormous. I ask for your prayers for them as they recover, as they try to mute the sounds they heard last night, as they try to sleep and rest, and as they try to rebuild their lives.

Thank you so much for helping,
